Keswick Museum

Keswick Museum 📍 The heart of the Lakes
Keswick's museum of culture, landscape and people since 1898 ⛰️ It remains the only purpose-built museum in the county.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia
The Keswick Museum and Art Gallery in Cumbria was founded in 1873 and had a number of temporary homes as it grew, including the Moot Hall in Keswick town centre. A building was purpose built for it, in Fitz Park, partly as a memorial to the Hewetson brothers; distinguished Keswick benefactors, and to commemorate the jubilee of Queen Victoria. The two original

galleries were the Main Gallery and the Model Gallery, the latter built especially for Flintoft's famous model. The building work started in 1897 and the Grand Opening was on Easter Monday, April 11, 1898. The 'Picture Gallery' was added later, through the energies of Canon Rawnsley, a Museum Trustee and one of the founders of the National Trust. It opened in July 1906 with its first exhibition held by The Lake Artists Society.

If you’re stuck working from home this weekend, you might as well do it with a view like this.

Our Crosthwaite Room workspace has tables available to book every Friday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

You’ll also notice our tables are looking extra smart lately with brand new tablecloths. Huge thanks to our amazing volunteer Sue for putting her brilliant sewing skills to work on those.

Hop over to our website to check out the workspace details and reserve your spot.

You never know what might happen at Tuesday’s tonic!

Two Calvert Stables ponies came to visit us at Keswick Museum’s Tuesday’ Tonic today - but they weren’t up to giving rides really, so the Amy's Care trishaw was still put to good use - two fabulous trips along the railway path, enjoying the admiration of all those who marvel at us gliding past, wind in our hair and regal wave at the ready!

We will be getting our draft on for the last time tomorrow!

You will have the chance to make Peg Dolls in our self-guided craft drop in in our galleries, with all materials provided. Drop in any time between 10am and 12pm, and be prepared to let your imaginations go wild!

The session is free but you do need to have a valid entry ticket for the museum to enter the gallery.

The best bit is that you only pay once and you can visit the museum as many times as you wish within a 12 month period!

Today our Sunday Scene takes in the views from Friar’s Crag!

It may still be summer, but we’ve had one downpour and our thoughts are already turning to all those crisp autumn walks.

If you can't get to Friar’s Crag, don't worry! You can still virtually visit Friar's Crag on the Ariel map in our Outside In exhibition.

Come and experience the magic for yourself!

We are a sucker for Autumn Scenes but what’s your favorite season for exploring the Lake District? Let us know in the comments!
