Love was in the air this Valentine’s weekend - but did you know there’s a remarkable love story at the very heart of Hardmans' House?

Sometimes the simplest records, can reveal the most fascinating stories. While exploring the Hardmans’ collection, our Archivist discovered an unassuming telegram that changed the course of Edward and Margaret’s relationship.

In the late 1920s, when Margaret moved to a photography studio in Paisley, Scotland, the pair wrote constant letters. They wrote in third person, adopting the nicknames Pearl (Margaret) and Gobbles (Edward).

In 1931, Maragret ended the relationship marry someone else. While travelling in Barcelona Edward sent a telegram simply saying, “he wants you”. This appears to be the declaration Margaret was waiting for as she broke off her engagement and married Edward on 10th August 1932.
