“I am interested in the return of visual pleasure as a feminist intervention in painting. I bring a feminist analysis of my own body experience, of political events, and of art history, to painting, using visual language not just to illustrate temporal political battles but also to offer an empowered, expanded example of what a feminist gaze would produce.”

—Mira Schor, “Cherchez la femme PEINTRE! A Parkett Inquiry,” 1993

Back in September 2018, we opened group exhibition ‘Alter Heroes Coalition’ 💥

This exhibition title came from Taus Makhacheva| Таус Махачева’s intent to form a Super Heroes Coalition - a community of everyday heroes 🦸. These heroes would support each other and unite for a common goal❗

This group exhibition presented a selection of artworks, each exploring the concept of an alter ego. The artists each reinvented themselves as unconventional, but empowering heroes. These heroes were reflecting on belonging, cultural displacement and unbecoming.🌕

‘Alter Heroes Coalition’ exposed the constructed nature of identity and challenged gendered behaviours by embracing the polyvalence of reinvented personas.

The exhibition featured works from Tomaso Binga , Leah Capaldi Leah Capaldi Cibelle Cavalli Bastos [{"CIBELLE"(} )]] , Gery Georgieva Gery Georgieva , Yolanda López , Kent Monkman Kent Monkman & Gisèle Gordon, Adrian Piper, Tabita Rezaire , Super Sohrab and Super Taus.

This exhibition was generously supported by Arts Council England

🌼 BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS 🌼

We are looking back to a round up of previous book recommendations from our team!

✨ Wet - Mira Schor, 1997 -
Mira Schor brings a maverick perspective and provocative voice to the issues of contemporary painting, gender representation, and feminist art. Mira Schor

✨ Woman on the Edge of Time - Marge Piercy, 1976 -
Both a feminist and utopian science fiction classic, exploring utopian studies, technoscience, socialisation, and female fantasies.

✨ Full Surrogacy Now - Sophie Lewis, 2019 -
Another iconic feminist text, Lewis brings a fresh perspective on surrogates and their relationships, kinship, friendship, support and that ‘it takes a village to raise a baby’.

✨ The Right to S*x - Amia Srinivasan, 2021 -
Srinivasan examines the politics and ethics of s*x in our world, questioning how we should talk about s*x, our relationships with s*x, and its relationship to gender, class, race and power.

✨ Abécédaire - Sharon Kivland, 2022 -
A ‘free associations” book, following Kivland’s exercise of writing 5 days a week for the duration of an analytic hour, for a year. The characters of the book are some real, some imagined women, whose names start with “A”. “I invented nothing. I am the aleph” says the author.

Part II of our historic LGBT+ sites in Camden!

6️⃣ Gay’s The Word, Marchmont Street 📚

The iconic shop opened in 1979, and is now the UK’s oldest LGBT+ bookshop and for many years has served as an important centre for the community and for activism. In the 1980s it provided a meeting and organising space for Le****ns and G**s Support the Miners (LGSM). In 1984 Customs officers carried out a raid on the shop for importing books which they described as ‘indecent’.

7️⃣ Mother Clap’s Molly House 💞

“Molly Houses” were spaces created in secret for gay men that ranged from private back rooms to large public houses. Mother Clap’s was a private residence and coffee house, popular amongst the underground gay community between 1724 and 1726.

8️⃣ Electric Ballroom, Camden High Street 🎶

The well-known ‘Pits and Perverts’ benefit event was held at the Electric Ballroom in December 1984, and it was organised by Le****ns and G**s Support the Miners, who had Bronski Beat as the main act.

9️⃣ Site of the Camden Le***an Centre & Black Le***an Group, Phoenix Road ✊

Historic England says that for nearly ten years Camden was home to the country’s only dedicated le***an centre. The Camden Le***an Centre, located at 54–56 Phoenix Road, worked alongside with the independent Camden Black Le***an Group and provided an important venue for socialising, organising and campaigning. The centre also gave support to groups consisting of Black le***ans and le***ans with disabilities, and it campaigned against laws such as Section 28.

🔟 Doughty Street 📚

It was previously the house of Edith Lees, who was a writer and a women’s rights activist, and Havelock Ellis, who was an early s*xologist.
