Every breath is an act of destruction.

Ivana Bašić spent six years building a machine that breathes like the artist - pneumatic hammers gradually destroying the alabaster stone at its heart, timed to run out before the show closes.

Her work has always been about the fragility of the body and what survives it.

“For the body, breathing is a slow, degrading process - yet at the same time, it is life-giving.”

Ivana Bašić — Passion of Pneumatics, 2020–24.
Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin.

“The Daydreaming paintings are about being too wrapped up in one’s own mental torment. They are about sleeping in the daytime, and missing - or not being aware of - the sunshine.”

The Future Is Stupid.

Antony Micallef has spent twenty years painting the world as it actually is - consumed, violent, contradictory. Working in thick impasto oil on industrial aluminium, he throws paint from a metre and a half away with foot-long brushes - it folds, curls, builds into portraits from the wreckage of contemporary life: politicians as health warnings, soldiers dissolving into their own excess.

“It’s like we have diabetes from the malicious, processed clickbait diet we’re fed, but we’re malnourished.”

His first major survey exhibition brings together over fifty works alongside a new series made during a year-long residency in Munich. On now until 18 October at MUCA.

Love ends. Her paintings don’t…

Faye Wei Wei builds worlds from classical myth, folklore and personal relationships - following a figure or a flower into something monumental. Nothing is planned; she creates from pure instinct.

Once, she painted a boy she was falling in love with sheltering under a snowdrop, surrounded by a small blizzard of snow. When it didn’t work out, she hid the painting when he came to the studio.

Her paintings are inseparable from her private life. They are mythology made from experience - lovers, friends, the natural world, art history - layered until the personal becomes something larger than itself.

“I like to paint people I fall in love with, because even though it often doesn’t last, I’m making mythology for the love that we had.”

Happy birthday Jess Allen.

Jess has spent her career painting the interior life - the self-questioning that never stops, the fears and insecurities the unconscious sends when you’re not paying attention. It’s a compulsion she’s never tried to escape, and it’s become the foundation of everything she makes.

“The Daydreaming paintings are about being too wrapped up in one’s own mental torment. They are about sleeping in the daytime, and missing the sunshine.”

On Tuesday she opens her debut solo exhibition in New York.

“We are born to be clothed, and buried in cloth. Cloth is not just a status symbol but also a symbol of dignity.”

Abe paints figures that are simply existing - present, unhidden, at rest in their own skin. The indigo has a specific history: one length of indigo cloth was valued as equivalent to one human body in the slave trade ledgers. In Abe’s work, it becomes skin.

This week, she represents Uganda at the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia - Ugandan Pavilion ‘KAMPALA’, dedicated to material culture, spirituality, and social memory across East African creative traditions.

Curated by Taga Francis Nuwagaba, commissioned by Acaye Kerunen.

From her debut London solo presentation at UNIT in 2022 to the Ugandan Pavilion at Venice.

Kate MccGwire works with what most people throw away.

Feathers collected from butchers, gamekeepers and pigeon fanciers - sorted by species, by size, by colour, then coiled and pressed into forms that feel more organic than made.

“Human beings can’t make a feather that is so light, so thin; that has the color, the regimentation; that can allow something to fly, get wet… We just can’t do it. We are incapable of manufacturing that, with all this technology that we have.”

To coincide with the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, Kate’s new work MURMUR - pheasant feathers in a bronze finished cabinet - has been selected by Dries Van Noten for ‘The Only True Protest Is Beauty’ at Palazzo Pisani Moretta, Venice. On show until 4 October 2026.
