in 1923, the woman female President of the Geological Society was born: Janet Watson.

On entering Imperial, Janet Watson found herself to be the only woman in the department apart from the secretary and the cleaners. She took her degree in two years, graduating with first-class honours, later achieving her PhD and serving as the Geological Society’s first female President between 1982 and 1984.

Janet Watson’s pioneering work on the Precambrian rocks of Scotland has had a significant impact on modern geological science. You can read some of her work in the Lyell Collection via www.lyellcollection.org/action/doSearch?AllField=janet+watson
