Isokon Flats forms part of Hampstead's heritage, an area of London shaped by centuries of cultural, intellectual and architectural history. From the open landscape of Hampstead Heath to the streets and squares that have long attracted artists, writers, architects and émigré communities, the area offers a rich mix of historic buildings and places of cultural significance. Several of these buildings participate in London Open House during September, including Isokon Flats where you can visit three flats 19-20th September 2026.

On Thursday 24th September, we are showing a film about graphic designer FHK (Frederick Henry Kay) Henrion, who lived and worked around the corner from Isokon Flats. FHK Henrion (1914-1990) was a German-Jewish émigré who arrived in London in 1936, having fled Germany for Paris in 1933. He worked on wartime propaganda projects for the UK Ministry of Information, before moving to the Hampstead house in 1947 with his first wife, sculptor Daphne Hardy Henrion (1917-2003). FHK Henrion went on to design some of the world's most recognisable brands including the packaging for Tate & Lyle sugar and the corporate identity for KLM. The award winning film 'Designing From Home' is directed by Harriet Atkinson and Sue Breakell, who will both be present for a Q&A. Designing from Home draws on little-seen original material from Henrion’s archive, held at the Design Archives, as well as interviews with Henrion’s four children, filmed in the extraordinary house which was the family home for almost 80 years. The documentary was made with Banyak Films, and was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the University of Brighton School of Art & Media and School of Humanities & Social Science, and the Centre for Design History. Tickets through Eventbrite.

Architectural photographer Adam Štěch has been to Melbourne, and documented Cairo Flats, the Australian sister building of Isokon Flats. The Australian architect Best Overend had been an assistant of Isokon architect Wells Coates in London, before returning home and designing Cairo Flats in 1935. Also known as the Cairo Bachelor Flats, each apartment was designed to "provide maximum amenity in minimum space for minimum rent". Like Isokon, Cairo Flats was designed for the middle-classes, with wardrobes, dressing tables, cupboards, shelves, kitchen tables, chairs and the bed all incorporated as built-in elements. Only a suitcase of clothing was required when moving in.

Wells Coates the radio man. The BBC had started in 1922, and Broadcasting House opened in 1932, employing Wells Coates, Serge Chermayeff, Raymond McGrath, Reginald Maufe and Dorothy Warren Trotter to design the sound studios. The number of licensed radios in Britain grew from about 3 million in 1930 to nearly 9 million by 1939, so it's no surprise that radio manufacturer EKCO (E.K. Cole Ltd.) turned to Wells Coates, Serge Chermayeff and Raymond McGrath for product design. The first radio designed by Wells Coates for EKCO was the iconic AD65, introduced in 1934 after being designed in 1932, the same period as he worked on Isokon Flats. The AD65 radio was occasionally made in green (often referred to as onyx or mottled green), though exceptionally rare. While standard production models were walnut brown or black, special-order colours were produced using urea-formaldehyde instead of standard Bakelite. You can see several Wells Coates' radios on display at the Isokon Gallery.
