This months Curator’s Object is The Pearly Queen of Hampstead ✨

This Pearly Queen Toby Jug is sat on a basket, holding an oyster with pearls in her hand and her skirt says, 'Happy Hampstead'. A Toby Jug, sometimes called a fillpot or philpot, is a pottery jug in the form of a person. They are made from earthenware, stoneware, or porcelain, and are usually hand-painted.

Pearly Kings and Queens are a charitable tradition of working-class culture in London. The Pearly King and Queen of Hampstead in the early 20th century were Bert and Rebecca Matthews who lived in the area, including in New End, from 1902. Their two children took over the tradition after the couple had achieved 60 years as pearlys, raising thousands of pounds for local charities.

✨ Upcoming Talk at Burgh House ✨

Join Curator Amy Miller for a free talk exploring the work and legacy of Donald Towner, the subject of our major exhibition for 2026.

Born in Eastbourne, East Sussex, Towner moved to Hampstead in the late 1920's eventually settling on Church Row, where he would live for the next 50 years. He was part of a convivial group of artists and writers, and his work often conjured an idyll of summer days and lush greenery that set off the architecture of Old Hampstead. His paintings also record changes capturing what are now lost views.

This talk will take place in the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Gallery.
