Erwin Rommel permanently left North Africa in March 1943 after his requests to withdraw the trapped Axis forces from Tunisia were denied by Hi**er. Following the failure of his final offensive (Battle of Medenine) on March 6, 1943, a sick and disillusioned Rommel travelled to Rome and then to Ukraine to plead for a withdrawal, but was instead placed on secret sick leave and replaced by General Hans-Jürgen von Arnim.
