A Teahouse Above the Ground 🏡

Perched above the landscape like a hidden retreat, Terunobu Fujimori’s Beetle House is an experimental teahouse that rethinks what a building can feel like. It was created as part of a project exploring architecture as an experience, where “dwelling” becomes something you actively do and feel, not just a place you enter.

Reached only by ladder, the small elevated space separates you from the ground and changes your perspective as soon as you climb up.

Its charred timber exterior gives it a striking, textured black surface, achieved through the traditional Japanese technique of yakisugi, which also helps preserve the wood. Part shelter, part sculpture, it feels both simple and surreal.

Make memories together at Young V&A 🎶✨

Join us for a playful, sensory-filled family event inspired by the much-loved Mini Play sessions. Explore music, sound and creativity together through messy play, mark making, improvisation and sensory activities inspired by objects from our Play Gallery.

We’re excited to welcome vocalist and composer Luisa Gerstein, who will lead families through a joyful exploration of how sound looks, moves and feels.

Perfect for little ones and their grown-ups, this is a chance to connect, play and create something new together 💫

A Queen Bee fit for the spotlight 🐝👑

This costume design by Attilio Comelli was created for 'Babes in the Wood' at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 1907–08. It’s hard not to imagine the character stealing every scene in this dazzling costume.

Cheeky, chatty and impossible to ignore 🐦✨

Ollie Beak brought chaos, comedy and plenty of personality to children’s TV in the 1960s.

Created by Peter Firmin and Joan Firmin, Ollie became famous for his hilarious double act with Fred Barker the dog.

And yes… he even shared the screen with The Beatles on their first nationally broadcast TV appearance.

Calling all future animators! 🎬

Join us at Young V&A’s Animation Lab, a hands-on workshop for budding creators aged 7–14. Over 90 minutes, young people will explore the magic of animation through stop-motion, back-drop design, and clay modelling.

- Work with a real professional animator.

- Create sound effects at our Foley & Sound Design Station.

Robots, aliens and… landscape spaceships?! 🚀👽

Guy Allott creates prints that feel like they’ve landed straight out of a retro sci-fi dream. From mysterious lunar landscapes to whimsical robotic characters, his work explores themes of discovery, exploration and imaginary worlds.

Every print starts with woodblock printing, but no two are exactly the same. By layering 5-12 colours and adding hand-painted details, each piece becomes its own unique mini universe.

Equal parts funny, strange and nostalgic, these prints prove that space can be seriously creative.

Kiyomori’s Daughter Writing to Her Mother ✨

This beautiful Japanese print is called a nishiki-e, which means “brocade picture” because of its rich, colourful patterns.

It was made by Chōbunsai Eishi, an artist who once trained as a samurai before becoming a printmaker in Edo-period Japan.

The picture shows a young woman writing a letter to her mother. Even though she lived centuries earlier, the artist shows her in the fashionable style of his own time, just like a historical story told with a modern twist!
