Are you dressing up for Purim?

These photographs offer a glimpse into the Adeni Jewish community and their Purim celebrations in the 1950s.

For many Jewish communities, Purim is a joyful celebration marked by hearing the Megillat Esther, dressing up in costume, sharing festive meals, giving gifts to friends and donating to those in need. The festival retells the story of Esther, Queen of Persia, over 2,000 years ago, whose bravery is remembered in the Book of Esther. Purim is a time to reflect on courage, community, and the enduring message that good can overcome evil.

"Their marriage spanned 70 years and their social life continued well into their 90s, both of them dressed in the height of fashion. A highlight of their social calendar was their annual Hanukah party where this very chanukiah was lit every year amongst friends of all ages.

This week, the chanukiah returned home."

Hear from our Head of Collections about his work bringing a chanukiah from our collection back to a party where it was lit for nearly 70 years at the link below:

As we emerge from Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish Calendar, we are appalled and saddened to learn of the attack at Heaton Park Synagogue this morning. Our thoughts are with the families of those who were killed, those who have been injured and the entire Manchester community.

Jewish Museum London wishes everyone a Sweet New Year this Rosh Hashanah!

This engraving, after an original by Bernard Picart in the 18th Century, shows the Shofar being blown in the Synagogue. Picart's works generally focussed on the Sephardi community of Amsterdam.
