Happy !

Old Houses on Earl Street, Maidstone, c.1920's (Alleyway to Laurel Square to left, adjacent Fremlin's Dray Stables). Most of the old houses and shops on Earl Street still remain. The photograph was taken looking away from the Fremlin Walk development.

Thanks to our eagle-eyed followers who picked up on our caption error! A great example of community curatorship, the record has been corrected (above), to reflect the re-identification.

Creativity was in full flow at the last Cabinet of Voices workshop, where participants came together to bind the collaborative artists' books they have been creating through drawing, writing and illustration inspired by Maidstone's history 📚✨

Combining personal stories, local heritage and imaginative storytelling, these unique handmade books celebrate the voices, stories and creativity of the Maidstone community. The finished books will be showcased as part of Maidstone LitFest and will be available to purchase from Maidstone Museum shortly.

Giles Whitehead, the artist who facilitated the project took to BBC Upload recently to talk about LitFest and the Cabinet of Voices. His interview can be found on BBC Sounds (see link in the comments) and starts at 1 hour 10 minutes.

A summer project has shed new light on Maidstone’s holdings of wall plaster from the Otford Villa, also known as Progress Villa, excavated in 1926.

From lumps of plaster with faded paint, we learnt about motifs, colours and techniques of painters through the taste of Villa owners.

For : Shops in Sheerness c.1900.

The owners of a poulterers shop with their produce, either in Blue Town or in Sheerness High Street.

Both the poultry shop and the neighbouring butcher’s shop think nothing of hanging their wares in the open on their shop fronts (Cole Collection CC020).
