Last week it was our privilege to host three special visitors. Stan Nielsen, his daughter Beverley and Keith Barraclough. In 1958 Stan was one of four Malvern scientists that produced a new material to sense heat. No one has found anything better since. We retrieved the team's original report from our archive. The same material was chosen for the James Webb telescope in 2005. In 1988 Keith was one of two Malvern Scientists who developed and patented a technique to grow large pure single crystals of silicon. This material is essential for computer chips and memory storage chips. You can learn more about their inventions in The Technology Station.

Today is the 100th anniversary of H M Queen Elizabeth’s birth and the 50th anniversary year of her visit to Malvern to name RSRE. During her visit the scientists gave her and the Duke of Edinburgh a gift each.
She received 6 jewels made in the laboratory in a presentation case. This was to showcase the materials research that had been done in Malvern.
The Duke received a radar intruder alarm which showcased all the technologies invented in Malvern. Liquid crystal displays, special high frequency transistors for the radar and silicon photo cells to power it from light.

50 years ago on this date, HRH Queen Elizabeth came to Malvern to commemorate the renaming of RRE to RSRE - the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment. This marked the merging of the Services Electronic Research Establishment (SERL) at Baldock and the Signals Research and Development Establishment (SRDE) at Christchurch, Bedfordshire with RRE at Malvern.
During the visit Her Majesty was given some mementos and she sent to USA the first email ever sent by a monarch.

Come and learn more at The Technology Station. We open again next week on April 1st and every Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning until the end of October.
