Dorman Museum houses the history of Middlesbrough, its industries and its famous residents. Learn about how the town looked in the past, who lived there, and what they did. The museum houses the largest public collections worldwide of locally made Linthorpe Art Pottery and designs by Dr Christopher Dresser, who worked for a time as Art Superintendent at the Linthorpe Pottery. The museum offers a great range of permanent display galleries, and additional facilities such as a Victorian style tearoom on site, a museum shop selling exclusive Dresser merchandise, and an education suite. Entry to the museum permanent galleries is FREE and there is full disabled access throughout the building.

• The museum is located next to Albert Park and the Cenotaph on Linthorpe Road. Middlesbrough railway and bus stations are a 20minute walk away on a mostly level route.

Family Fun- 🎪🖍️
Monster Circus, 10.30am + 1.30pm: Enter a world where puppets roar, tumble and fly into life! Specially crafted for little hands, these monster stars are ready to amaze.

Spooky VR Ride, 10am - 3.30pm: encounter ghastly ghouls, petrifying pumpkins and sinister scarecrows in a fully immersive 4D family experience.

Alien Attack Trail! 10am - 3.30pm: Take us to your leader! Learn about the aliens, figure out their alphabet + crack the hidden message, in this immersive new experience.

LEGO Halloween Build-Along, 12pm + 3pm: SOLD OUT

Spooked, 6.15pm: an immersive evening of magic and mystery at the Dorman Museum! Journey through a series of eerie rooms where strange experiments, ghostly encounters, and impossible illusions await around every corner.

🚗 A Drive ’Round the Boro 🚗

In a world of electric buses and self-driving cars, it's easy to forget what populated the roads of historic Middlesbrough. From horse-drawn carriages to hand-cranked cars, these streets have seen a great deal of traffic. but resting in the Dorman Museum is a snapshot of pre-war motoring.

This is the Standard Ten, a four door saloon which rolled out all the way back in 1934. Founded in 1903 by Reginald Walter Maudslay, the Standard Motor Company grew to relative success throughout the early twentieth century, eventually purchasing and incorporating Triumph, the now famous motorcycle manufacturer.

The Standard Ten was released as an improvement over 1933’s ‘Big Nine’ and came in a variety of models including the Deluxe, and the sporty 10/12, which boasted a max speed of 70 miles per hour. Sadly, Reginald Maudslay passed away the very year these models went into production, preventing him from seeing the success of the Standard 10s and their future iterations the Flying Tens.

Just how many Standard cars and Triumph bikes have roamed the streets of Middlesbrough throughout its storied past, we’ll never know. But the Dorman Museum maintains one such model, the Standard Ten, to remind us of the changing face of Teesside traffic.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Britain’s own ICI

ICI’s products were used in everything from WWII mu*****ns, explosives and radar, to Quorn, Dulux paint, fertiliser, and pharmaceuticals. They invented polyethylene plastics by exposing ethylene to extreme pressure and even briefly worked towards creating an atomic bomb.

It was also one of the North East’s most noteworthy employers, opening two facilities along the Tees Valley in Billingham and Wilton. The Billingham works were so advanced in their day as to inspire Aldous Huxley’s dystopian science fiction novel Brave New World, with Huxley reportedly describing the facility as an “ordered universe in the midst of a wider world of planless incoherence”.

Today, ICI’s contributions to Teesside and beyond are remembered in the Dorman Museum’s ‘Town in Time’ exhibition.
