Captain Cook Birthplace Museum Open during school holidays. Tuesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm.

Nestled within the picturesque Stewart Park just outside of Middlesbrough, our museum is situated near the very spot where Captain Cook's birthplace cottage once stood. The museum is situated in a purpose-built building close to the granite urn marking the site of Cook’s birthplace cottage in Stewart Park, Marton, Middlesbrough. The museum tells the story of one of the world’s greatest navigators and mariners through themed display galleries, temporary exhibitions, associated activities and events and a lively education programme. There is full disabled access throughout and additional facilities such as the Discovery Room (education & activities), the Endeavour Room (meetings & events), the Resolution Resources Room (archive & research), gift/book shop, and a café.

Enjoy an eerie ocean encounter when Rockpool School visits the Cook this October half term, included with museum admission! 🪸🐙

Step into the twilight zone of our coastline and come face-to-face with otherworldly creatures of the deep.

Then get stuck into a craft with our 'Creepy Creature Crafts': a hands-on family craft workshop themed around the ocean’s most fascinating legends.

🐌Get ready for a spine-tingling experience! 🐍

Join us for a day of unforgettable encounters with some of the most fascinating creatures. The Creepy Critters & Reptile Zoo is home to a diverse collection of reptiles, insects, and amphibians, from slithering snakes to towering tarantulas.

There will be an opportunity to touch and learn more about all the different creatures and their habitats.

Join us on Wednesday 28 October for a spine-tingling, laugh-out-loud adventure!

In this interactive storytelling party, little monsters will gather to hear spooky, magical tales that come to life before their eyes. Unleashing their imagination with, movement, Makaton, music and audience participation, children become part of the story, helping mischievous monsters in their thrilling adventures.

Our Autumn special activities start on Tues 25 October with our Creepy Critters and Reptile Zoo but you can drop in on weekends to explore the museum from Sat 3 October!

On this day in 1768..

Captain James Cook and the Endeavour set sail on a voyage that would reshape the world's maps.

Their mission took them from Plymouth to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus, before continuing to New Zealand and Australia. Along the way, Cook accurately charted new territories, improved navigation techniques, and successfully reduced scurvy among his crew.

From mapping New Zealand's coastline to landing at Botany Bay in 1770, Cook's journey remains one of the most significant voyages of discovery in history.

On this day in 1770, James Cook stood on Possession Island and claimed the eastern coast of Australia for the British Crown, naming it New South Wales.

While historically recorded as a pivotal moment of maritime exploration, today this anniversary carries deeply contrasting meanings. For many, it is remembered as a feat of charting and navigation.

For the First Nations peoples of Australia, however, it marks the beginning of a profound dispossession of lands they had nurtured and governed for over 65,000 years.

True history requires looking at the full picture. Middlesbrough Museums is committed to presenting these complex, shared histories. We invite visitors to explore our collections and reflect on both the global impact of the HMB Endeavour’s voyage and the lived experiences of Australia's First Nations peoples.
