🐋 Did you know?
The Newport Medieval Ship was one of the great merchant vessels of its time. Ships like this were the largest, most complex and most expensive machines of the medieval world, making them both valuable investments and powerful status symbols.
A crew of around 40 sailors and 20 merchants would have needed huge amounts of food and fresh water. Even on a two-week voyage, the weight of the people and their provisions could total almost 12.5 tonnes. But that was just the beginning. Archaeologists estimate the ship could have carried up to 174.5 tonnes of cargo. That's roughly the weight of a blue whale, the largest animal on Earth. Pop along on Fridays and Saturdays until the 31st October to find out more interesting facts and stories about our medieval ship.
