What an incredible couple of days with the Falmouth students.
We started in Cardiff with a visit to National Museum Wales to spend some time with David Hurn’s incredible print-swap archive, specially arranged for us by our good at the museum, James Milne 🏴.
And what an archive it is. Original prints by Sebastião Salgado, Steve McCurry, Tish Murtha, Don McCullin, Bill Brandt, Robert Frank.. the list goes on. To be able to stand there and see these photographs as physical prints, up close and away from the pages of books, was pretty special.
We also had the chance to see clementine.schneidermann brilliant ‘Ffasiwn’ exhibition while we were there. We highly reccomend a visit if you’re in the area.
Then yesterday, we had the absolute privilege of spending time with David Hurn himself.
Handwritten letters from Henri Cartier-Bresson, contact sheets from his time photographing The Beatles, and stories from a lifetime spent making photographs.. casually dropping knowledge and experience bombs throughout.
There are some things you simply can’t learn from books or classrooms. Sitting with David, looking through the physical traces of photographic history and listening to him talk about the work, is one of them.
A pretty special two days.
Huge thanks to James Milne 🏴, and to the Falmouth students for being such a great bunch to spend time with.
