My first ever exhibition! HOMECOMING is coming (geddit) on Friday 16th October. If you like landscape painting, this is the show for you. I'll be displaying works since I started painting nearly 3 years ago now, up to my most recent pieces. Some will still be wet on the canvas!

I'll also be doing two painting demonstrations, both at 10am-11:30am on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th. I'll take you through what goes through my head when I'm trying to construct a painting - but be braced, there's a lot of loosely connected stuff rumbling round in there and competing for information.

Full info for bith the exhibition and the painting demonstrations are on the PlymouthArtWeekender.com website.

Links to it all are on my highlights reel.

Plymouth has recently seen the main city centre thoroughfare revamped. Still not sure what I think of it. But it makes for a very interesting subject - lots of intersecting lines playing against the 1950s Portland Stone buildings. But the rill (waterway) is divine, so good to have flowing water back in town.

If you want to see this painting (and others), don't forget I have a show coming up 16-18 October as part of PlymouthArtWeekender.com. You'd be silly to miss it.

Eek! I'm doing my first exhibition, and I'm bricking it because I haven't done anything like this before 😬 but if you like landscape painting, come and take a look πŸ–ΌοΈ

It's on for the 16-18th October, and I'll be doing painting demonstrations on the mornings of Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th (10:00-11:30am).

Part of the reason I'm doing this exhibition is that it's the ! Artists all around the city will be opening their doors and you'll have the chance to see behind the scenes with some of our creative people. It's well worth a look and seeing what else is on.

The event details are on the website and I'll add the links to my stories πŸ”—

I'm genuinely bricking it, I haven't done something like this before 😬

All details are on the website, I'll add the links to my stories.

You know those brash, harsh pigments? The ones which come with every starter pack of paint - acidic pthalo greens and blues, cadmium red, lemon yellows. I've been doing a bit of thinning about them this week after using them in a painting as my 'go-to' colours, rather than rare boosters when intensity is needed. And after chatting to a few fellow artists and some valued collectors, I've come to some conclusions.

So image 1 is my painting using these colours. Specifically and mainly the ones I've just mentioned, but also cadmium yellow medium and cadmium orange. I found them really hard to balance, especially when I wanted to focus on soft light and colours receding into the background. Part of the problem is that their tinting strength - especially the pthalos - are so high, I'm racing around my colour theory palette to try and balance them, and my usual easy colour relationships are not there. Pthalo green and Cadmium red make an amazing chromatic black, but the balance is so delicate to get right, and it doesn't lighten well towards blue or yellow - two of the most common landscape and distance colours. I think you can see thismoat clearly in the high blueish background plant, which I was wanting to recede into the overall light coming through the greenhouse windows. But with pthalo blue, that subtly isn't there, and neither is the distance. Instead it's an intense colder colour which doesn't want to shift towards soft and warm.

I've edited the painting to make it resemble something closer to my usual colour choices. As you can feel, the soft light and distance comes racing in, but I lose some of the foreground intensity. However, everything is relative and I doubt you'd notice this unless it was displayed next to image 1. It's probably most apparent when I've added thicker paint in leaves where the light is shining through them. Usually I would using scraping back to white and glazing to achieve an intense lighting effect.

This image is a mix of the two, using the background recession of softer colours with the intensity of harsher pigments in certain areas. But I'm still not convinced. I think similar effects can be achieved with colours which are less

It's been a great weekend in Torquay. I loved painting (and apparently gurning πŸ˜‚ ) in the greenhouse at Torre Abbey for the plein air competition yesterday, which my mate Gabrielle Faeth Peckham won! Check slide 5 for her utterly brilliant take on the sculpture in the gardens.

I meanwhile was etching away and really enjoying painting all the plants with the hazy light filtering through the glass. Even if I have rekindled my hatred for the pthalo colours with this acidic green monstrosity of a painting πŸ˜‚ Who needs subtlety anyway?
