We often get asked what is the difference between a goniatite and an ammonite?
The term "ammonite" is often used as a catch-all for all extinct, shelled cephalopods (ammonoids), but scientifically, goniatites and true ammonites are very distinct evolutionary branches. The main differences lie in their geological age and suture lines ( these are the internal patterns where chambers meet the shell).
They lived during completely different epochs, making them excellent index fossils for geologists.
Goniatites thrived long before the dinosaurs appeared, during the Devonian, Carboniferous, and Permian periods.
Ammonites evolved later and lived alongside the dinosaurs through the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods, eventually going extinct 66 million years ago.
The definitive way to tell them apart is to look at their internal dividing walls, known as septa. As the shell grows, the animal creates these chambers, and where the wall meets the outer shell, it leaves a "suture line".
* Goniatites: Have simple, smooth, wavy lines that typically form a zigzag pattern without sub-divisions.
* Ammonites: Have incredibly complex, frilly, or fern-like suture patterns that are heavily branched.

Dusting shelves and this slice of fossil wood caught my eye. Does anyone else think it looks a bit like the head of a tiger or leopard snarling? It even has an eye.

Weather warnings for extreme heat here on Anglesey. If you are visiting us at Stone Science PLEASE do not leave your dog in the car even in the shade with windows open. Our museum and shop has always welcomed dogs and it’s very cool and shady inside here.

We have not raised our museum entry prices since 2023.
A rise this year would be 2% higher than the Chancellor’s gift of reduced VAT which would have given us a lot of administrative problems. Instead we have decided not to raise our entry prices this year despite the rise in inflation we have experienced. We hope you will appreciate this position. Thank you.

Just in, ancient Mesopotamian cylinder seals, approx 1500BC. I didn’t have any clay to roll them in to depict the images and had to make do with some white tack.
