Prestongrange Museum

Prestongrange Museum Prestongrange is a free open-air museum that tells 700 years of industrial heritage history. We serve hot and cold drinks as well as light refreshments.

Prestongrange is a free open- air museum - managed by East Lothian Council Museums - and a site of major importance in the story of Scotland's Industrial Revolution. It was the location of a sixteenth-century harbour, a seventeenth-century glass works, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century potteries and a nineteenth/twentieth-century coal mine and brick works. Remnants of these former industries can

still be seen, including the rare Hoffman Kiln built in 1937 and the Cornish Beam Engine, unique in Scotland as the only beam engine still on the site where it worked. Prestongrange is a family friendly site, with a dedicated play area located in the Visitor Centre, entertaining trailsheets and outdoor games with an open play area. Our cafe - the Pithead Canteen - is located in the Visitor Centre which once served as the miners’ canteen. We have a regular schedule of fun events and temporary exhibitions.

Hello Prestongrange friends and followers, it's been great to welcome school visits in the last week. We have lots more booked in, and so will have a slightly reduced timetable for tours for the next few weeks. On Wednesdays, we will not be offering tours until Weds 17 June. On Thursday mornings, we will not be doing them until Thurs 11 June. We are still however running tours on Thursday afternoons (2pm), on Fridays and both weekend days (11.30 and 2pm). So hopefully people can find a slot that suits them. Many thanks for your cooperation- it's so important that local children can have these visits to find out about this amazing place on their doorstep!

We had a brilliant time last weekend at the Big Prestongrange LEGO Build! It was a great atmosphere and people worked really hard to complete the Cornish Beam Engine. Come and view the finished article in the Visitor Centre! A huge thank you to everyone who took part. And a special thank you to Fiona, from Historic Environment Scotland, and Alistair, Master Lego-builder! πŸ˜πŸ†

Excited about our Big Prestongrange LEGO Build this Sat and Sun (2nd and 3rd May)! As we're expecting to be busy building, full guided tours will not be available, but visitors will still be able to access the Beam Engine and Engine Shed. Or you can borrow a headset and take the audio tour. Cafe will be open as usual.
Please note that visitors coming by car will need to come via the bottom road (B1348) as Manager's Brae (Drummohr House Road) is closed.

Looking forward to this at the start of May.Get in touch with any queries πŸŸ₯🟨🟩🟦

But, as the photos of the genuine article show, there's nothing like the real thing!
Happy Christmas, Prestongrange friends, and look forward to seeing you in 2026!
