Well I Never Knew That !

In June 1960, it was officially decided that "Pro Tem" (for the time being), vehicles described as hovercraft would be regarded as aircraft. They operated under "Permits to Fly" issued by the Ministry of Aviation. Because they hovered, initial regulatory thinking was dominated by the aviation industry, and they were often licensed as aircraft.

More Isle of Wight related aviation history can be found by visiting the Wight Aviation Museum at Sandown Airport which is free to enter, dog friendly and has free car parking, open 10-3 Fri-Tues. There you will find very informative volunteers and fascinating displays and exhibits that will guide you through from the early days of flight. You could end your visit with a virtual reality flight over the Island.
