Country House Cricket within Somerset

Perhaps an understated facet of the development of local / club cricket within the County of Somerset was the influence of the families of the large Country Houses within the County.

In an interesting research project Mr Adrian Mercer has started to document the development of local cricket via these houses for example Hestercombe, Butleigh Court etc.

The first set of Adrian’s findings are now published on the Somerset Cricket Museum website here….

An end of season poem and a reminder that now the Somerset Cricket Museum is only open by arrangement - do contact us if you would like to visit us.

The cricket season is over, the Museum is closed today,
The ancient Old Priory Barn shuts out the autumn grey.
No footsteps tread the stone-paved floor where Somerset legends rest,
No eager eyes look through the glass at Harold Gimblett’s best.

The Somerset County Ground falls into a silent sleep,
As winter shadows round the stands begin to softly creep.
The ghosts of Tom Abell’s drives echo across the square,
But only misty October rain is left to linger there.

Behind the locked and barred oak doors, the treasured scorecards fade,
The blazers, caps, and historic bats wait quietly in the shade.
The c***r county's summer cheers have vanished with the sun,
The banners down, the gates secured, the long campaign is done.

Yet wrapped within these five hundred years of history and stone,
The spirit of the beautiful game is never left alone.
The heart of Somerset cricket will sleep beneath the frost,
Until the April sun returns, and not a dream is lost.

Thank you AI !

As a result the Museum was full with visitors from various Devon cricketing organisations watching the awards being presented by Somerset Head Coach, Jason Kerr.

A special cricketing occasion took place at St George’s Church, Bicknoller on Thursday 14th May when former Somerset and England batter Marcus Trescothick officially opened a new pair of oak doors dedicated to the memory of Harold Gimblett, Somerset’s highest first class run scorer who was born and grew up in the village.
