Bathers’
Acrylic and charcoal on plywood, 90 × 120 cm.
Here’s a big painting I’ve just finished. I started it over a year ago, but it never quite felt resolved until now. Returning to it with fresh eyes reminded me that sometimes a piece simply tells you when it’s ready.
Painting on plywood is something I really enjoyed working with, allowing the natural grain of the wood to come through and become the flesh of the figures. I’ve loved pushing myself into territory that feels a little different to my usual approach, exploring a 1930s-inspired theme with a strong graphic composition.
There are some interesting preliminary studies of this piece in the gallery too, if you’d like to see how it evolved.
