On this day 48 years ago, April 17, 1978, U.S. Air Force Airman James Ray Short, a 22-year-old native of Crawfordsville Indiana was killed in an explosion of an F-4D Phantom II external centerline fuel tank at RAF Bentwaters, Suffolk, England supporting NATO Cold War operations.
He had just arrived at this posting and had only been there about a month.
The Bentwaters Cold War Museum placed the commemorative plaque on the building where Airman Short tragically lost his life and for the fresh flowers placed every year to remember him.
