One of the strangest ghost stories connected with Roman Britain comes from the cellar of Treasurer's House, York. He was working in a York cellar when, he claimed, Roman soldiers marched straight through the wall.

In February 1953, apprentice heating engineer Harry Martindale was installing a boiler at Treasurer’s House when he heard what sounded like a trumpet. He initially thought it came from a radio—until a helmeted figure emerged through the brickwork.

Harry described a procession of Roman soldiers, including a mounted man, crossing the cellar before disappearing through the opposite wall. But one detail made his account particularly strange: the marching soldiers were visible only from the knees upwards.

Archaeological investigations have revealed a Roman road beneath the building, below the modern cellar floor. This became the familiar explanation for their apparently missing feet: the figures were supposedly walking along the ancient surface, rather than the floor Harry stood on. The archaeology confirms the road’s existence, although it cannot verify his reported encounter.

Treasurer’s House stands close to the former outer wall of the Roman fortress of Eboracum, with layers of ancient York surviving beneath it.

Whether imagination, a mistaken impression or something harder to explain, Harry’s account became one of York’s most enduring ghost stories.

Symbols used in her shrine are explained below.
The museum is open 11-4pm daily, £4.50 adults, £3.50 concessions.

The Rudder (Gubernaculum): Represented her power to steer and control the course of human lives and destinies.
The Cornucopia: Symbolized the horn of plenty and the riches or abundance she bestowed.
The Wheel or Ball: First mentioned by Cicero, the spinning wheel of fortune represented the unpredictable and shifting nature of luck—elevating people to prosperity or plunging them into ruin.
The Blindfold: Adopted later in antiquity and the Renaissance, it symbolized that luck is random and treats everyone impartially.
