The Yorkshire Museum sits in the heart of the York Museum Gardens in the centre of York. The museum was opened in 1830 by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society and was one of the first purpose-built museums in the country. On 1 August 2010, the museum reopened following a nine-month £2 million refurbishment project. The museum houses five galleries showcasing some of Britain’s finest archaeological

treasures and many rare animals, birds and fossils, in exciting displays with changing exhibitions. There are also regular events, lectures and activities to enjoy.

Help shape the future of accessible heritage! ✨

We are looking for disabled adults based in North Yorkshire with an interest in history to take part in a series of paid workshops in June/July.

The co-creation workshops will develop initial ideas for an accessible, immersive audio experience of St Mary's Abbey, York.

The workshops are part of a PhD research project at the University of York which is partnered with York Museums Trust.

It's set to be a gloriously sunny weekend for our upcoming Eboracum Roman Festival 2026 events! ☀️

Join us on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 May for the Living History Camp in York Museum Gardens, where visitors can meet costumed interpreters, experience re-enactments, discover demonstrations of Roman life and much more.

Assemble the legions… (and bring your parents!)🛡️⚔️

Barbaric Battles Live! return to York with a new Roman-themed conquest for Eboracum Roman Festival 2026.

Warriors young and old will take to the battlefield to take part in the UK’s largest Roman Family Battle, set in York Museum Gardens.

Children take on parents and vice-versa in this fully immersive play-fight, re-enacting the battle of Boudicca’s army of Ancient Britons against the might of the Roman Legions.

It’s been all hands on deck preparing for the opening of our latest exhibition Chariots, Treasure and Power: Secrets of the Melsonby Hoard this Friday 15 May 2026. 🛡️🐴

The exhibition presents the unprecedented discovery of the largest hoard of Iron Age metalwork to ever be found in the United Kingdom, the Melsonby Hoard, and we can’t wait to share this with you!
