THE PAUL HENRY THAT VANISHED

35 years on, where is Lough Corrib?

In May 1991, a thief walked into The Oriel Gallery in Dublin, removed a Paul Henry painting from its frame, concealed it beneath his jacket and simply walked out.

The painting was Lough Corrib.

It has never been seen again.

At the time, Gardaí were investigating several art thefts across Dublin, including the disappearance of a Jack B. Yeats painting from the Guinness Hop Store on the same day. The Yeats 'Shelling Peas in Moore Street' eventually resurfaced and is now in Crawford Art Gallery - The Paul Henry did not.

Owned by The Oriel Gallery's founder, Oliver Nulty, Lough Corrib was valued at £9,000 when it disappeared. Today, major works by Paul Henry can command hundreds of thousands at auction.

But where has this painting been for the past 35 years?

Has it changed hands? Is it hanging in a private collection, its history unknown? Or has it remained hidden away all this time?

We are revisiting this extraordinary disappearance in the hope that someone, somewhere, might recognise it.

Have you ever seen this painting?

Somewhere, this painting may still exist. Perhaps it's time somebody recognised it.

Forget the yearlings… apparently everyone wants the fox. 🦊

Our Fennec Fox has become something of a star at Goffs this week. With those ears, we probably shouldn’t be surprised.

What makes Irish art unique? 🇮🇪

For me, it is our landscape, our light, our history — and the extraordinary way Irish artists have interpreted all three.

From one generation to the next, Irish art tells the story of this place in a way nothing else quite can.

On the eve of Jack B. Yeats’ 155th birthday, we celebrate one of the great figures of Irish art.

Painted in 1955, The Top of the Tide is particularly special — one of the final paintings to come out of Jack B. Yeats’ studio, two years before his death.

The painting also has a remarkable history, with provenance that includes the National Gallery of Ireland, New York and The Model, Sligo.

The Top of the Tide is now on view at The Oriel Gallery as part of our upcoming Jack B. Yeats exhibition, featuring over 15 paintings by the artist created over 46 years — from 1909 to 1955 during some of the most significant changes in Irish history.

A wonderful opportunity to see the evolution of Yeats’ work across almost half a century, from his earlier, more figurative paintings to the colour and expression of his final years.

Victor Richardson | Colour, Light & Life

There is something wonderfully uplifting about Victor Richardson’s paintings. They shimmer with colour and movement, capturing those fleeting moments when the familiar suddenly feels extraordinary.

You Can Never Hold Back Spring bursts with the irrepressible energy of a new season — colour pushing through everywhere, almost impossible to contain.

Alongside it, The Red Barge, Grand Canal turns a familiar Dublin scene into a tapestry of reflected light, dappled trees and brilliant colour.

Two very different paintings, but unmistakably Victor — joyful, vibrant and full of life.

Now on view at The Oriel Gallery, 17 Clare Street, Dublin 2.

FRESH & VIBRANT | DAVID COYNE

We know how great Dubliner David Coyne’s paintings look — but we also know how good they make people feel.

Full of colour, movement and that unmistakable Irish light, David’s paintings have an energy that can completely lift a room.

From the wild Atlantic coast to familiar Dublin streets, there is something wonderfully optimistic about his work. Fresh, vibrant and full of life.

A selection of new works by David Coyne is now on view at The Oriel Gallery, 17 Clare Street, Dublin 2.

David Coyne at The Oriel

There is something unmistakably uplifting about the work of David Coyne.

His paintings capture the Irish landscape at its most vivid — great expanses of sky, changing light, winding roads and flashes of brilliant colour, all painted with that wonderful sense of movement and optimism that has become so recognisably his own.

A beautiful new collection of works by David Coyne is now hanging at The Oriel Gallery.

Pop in and see them in person at 17 Clare Street, Dublin 2, or contact us for details of the available works.

The Art of Buying Art | Part Two

What is the story behind a painting?

Sometimes a painting becomes much more interesting when you know the story behind it.

Who painted it? Where were they? What were they trying to capture? Is there a particular place, person or moment behind the work?

Part of the pleasure of collecting art is discovering these stories — because once you know them, you may never look at the painting in quite the same way again.
