Chatterjee & Lal

Chatterjee & Lal Keep up to date with what is going on at C&L. Chatterjee & Lal was formed in 2003 by husband and wife team Mortimer Chatterjee and Tara Lal.

Based in Mumbai’s Colaba art district, the gallery program is focused both on the work of emerging artists, mid-career artists and, increasingly, historical material. Over the last twelve years the gallery and its artists have formed an important node in the city’s maturing art scene. Gallery artists show globally and the gallery itself is an active participant in select art fairs and gallery exch

anges. The directors often write on art for national and international publications and are published authors.

Gagan Singh at the Drawing Biennial!!

Featuring over 300 works, Drawing Biennial 2026 is an incredible survey of contemporary drawing, as well as an important fundraising auction that offers a great opportunity to acquire works of art by renowned artists working internationally.

Each artist is invited to produce a new drawing on A4 paper, using any medium. Selected by a committee of invited curators and collectors alongside Drawing Room’s Co-founders and Directors, participating artists respond to themes spanning ecology, identity, spirituality, politics and imagined worlds.

The free exhibition at Drawing Room, now open 12-6pm, Wed-Sun, culminates in a two-week online auction fundraiser that ends at 9pm BST, 23 June, with bidding starting at £400. Visit the auction site to register to bid and view the available works!

Epochal: the period of pioneers
Curated by Mortimer Chatterjee

Mort’s journey with mid-20th century material began in earnest when curating and writing about the collections of the Taj Hotel and The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai in the early to mid 2000s. Marg published his book on the TIFR collection, which led to curating an exhibition at the NGMA Mumbai. It feels like a full circle moment to be curating ‘Epochal: the period of pioneers’.

On view till June 11th.
Across two gallery: DAG, Mumbai and Chatterjee & Lal.

Qamoos Bukhari who has written an excellent text on the PN Kohli photographs visited the gallery on the last day of the exhibition. So lovely that we got to spend the afternoon with him and Asaf Ali, his uncle and an old friend of ours!

‘A botanist in the field: the Kashmir archives of PN Kohli’ came to a close this evening with the gallery packed with Art Night Thursday goers. Thank you all for making the closing so special.

Moments like this make our journey as gallerists worthwhile. They also fill the space with the most wonderful energy.

Thank you Devieka Bhojwani for sharing your story with us! We were all delighted at the preview of this show when Devieka spotted her mother as a young girl in one of the photographs on display.

Absolutely lovely to have Devieka back in the gallery to talk about that moment and her family’s history with Kashmir.
