BERTIEN VAN MANEN | Annet Gelink Gallery

“What makes an everyday moment special?”

Today, we take a closer look at the world and work of photographer Bertien van Manen (1935–2024).

On 7 and 8 November, the Bertien van Manen Foundation will open its doors for a pop-up exhibition organised in collaboration with Annet Gelink Gallery.

“Tokyo Revisited” brings together a selection of photographs taken during Van Manen’s stay in Tokyo in 1996, which have never been shown in the Netherlands before.

We hope to see you at the pop-up exhibition “Tokyo Revisited” on 7 and 8 November, from 11 AM to 5 PM, and by appointment.

NOW OPEN | Antonis Pittas | “Bleu, blauw, μπλε, blau, blue”⁠

On the 18th of July, the doors to the exhibition “Bleu, blauw, μπλε, blau, blue” by Antonis Pittas opened at Kunstmuseum Den Haag.⁠
⁠
Drawing on the visual language of Modernism and De Stijl, Antonis Pittas explores how ideals such as peace, unity and progress are rendered visible through images, colours and symbols. Blue plays a central role in this.⁠
⁠
The colour simultaneously references De Stijl, NATO, spirituality and political power, lending meaning to the exhibition.⁠
⁠
Antonis Pittas combines works from the Kunstmuseum’s collection with architecture, archive material and new installations. In doing so, he demonstrates how colour, form and composition are not merely aesthetic, but also carry ideological significance.⁠

The exhibition runs until 07.03.2027.⁠

With the world watching football once again, this excerpt from the film ‘Een fotograaf filmt Amsterdam’, by Ed van der Elsken, feels especially fitting.

In the summer of 1982, the photographer and filmmaker Ed van der Elsken (1925–1990) roamed his hometown, Amsterdam. Armed with his 16mm camera, he captured the raw and vibrant city life, from people to buidlings to stores. He captured it all.

SAVE THE DATE | Giorgio Andreotta Calò | “Pietre di pane”

On 17.07, the exhibition “Pietre di pane” will open its doors to the public at MART Museum, IT.

“Pietre di pane” brings together thirty-three artists, Giorgio Andreotta Calò among them, around the idea of restanza: the choice to stay in fragile mountain regions. Taking its cue from Vito Teti’s writing, the exhibition reads these geographies through memory and attachment to place.

The work “Nebula” by artist Giorgio Andreotta Calò will be shown in the exhibition. The film follows a lone sheep as it moves through the Complesso dell’Ospedaletto, in Venice, guiding the viewer through spaces suspended between memory, reality, and imagination.

Inspired by the artist’s childhood memories and the legacy of psychiatrist Franco Basaglia, the film reflects on care, perception, and the shifting boundaries between reality and inner experience.

The exhibition runs from 17.07 - 15.11.2026

NEW WORK | David Claerbout | “Eagle Eye”

The work Eagle Eye has a duration of seven and a half hours, observing an immobilised but awake bald eagle positioned on a surgical table and viewed from various points of view.

The film is made from found footage of rescued raptors, stills, and filmed footage, later re-skinned as a sick North American bald eagle through a lengthy, procedural, and highly precise animation process, combining CGI and generative AI.

Slaughtered as intensely as the bison during the 19th century, the American bald eagle narrowly made it through to today, accepting the company of humans who put nest cams up for online excitement, as eagles try to rebuild their nests and families. Our patient used to be an icon of strength and courage, a sacred messenger between earthly and spiritual realms. Here the bird is reduced to an immobilised body while still maintaining the razor-sharp observation of a “tech boss”. Its artificial awareness resembles that of a patient with locked-in syndrome—the archetypal disembodiment disorder—while it continues to possess a pair of relentlessly observing eyes.

“Eagle Eye” was also recently exhibited at Art Basel 2026.

NOW OPEN | Bertien van Manen | “Echoes of the Ordinary”

Last week, the new exhibition “Echoes of the Ordinary”, dedicated to the work of Bertien van Manen, opened in Centre de la photographie de Mougins, FR.

The photographs of Bertien van Manen (1935-2024) are neither a private diary nor a family picture book. While some of the visual codes here might evoke aspects of either genre, the photographs meet none of the prerequisites. One might characterize her work as an intimate, subjective chronicle of the lives of ordinary people who, tossed about by the course of history that is written without them and that sometimes overwhelms and crushes them, try to get by, as best they can—and this is often far more heroic than one might think.

The exhibition runs until 04.10.2026
