ON VIEW | Lizzy Deacon’s first exhibition in The Bakery ‘Heavenly Beauty’.

The film Heavenly Beauty follows Deacon as she infiltrates an exclusive gala where wealthy adults live out their childhood fantasies by assuming the roles of princes and princesses.

To Deacon, an inquiry into the performance-of-self and aspirational individualism, is central in her work. Often adopting a DIY approach to filmmaking, Deacon enters ‘real’ situations alone to observe, magnify and participate in the rituals of self-presentation that define contemporary culture.

View the exhibition now at the Annet Gelink Gallery, in The Bakery. In the main space we present Leo Arnold’s second solo exhibition ‘Autumn Jounal’.

Exhibition runs till 16.05.2026
Laurierstraat 187-189, Amsterdam Deacon

Open now: Art Rotterdam 2026

Find us at booth F1 with a duo presentation by Ryan Gander and Helen Verhoeven.

Ryan Gander’s ongoing ballerina series reimagines Degas’ La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans, casting the figure in bronze and freeing her from her traditional pedestal. Lying on the ground and interacting with a small blue cube — a symbol of contemporary art and institutional structures — the ballerinas explore themes of agency, curiosity, and the tension between classical tradition and contemporary practice. Through these works, Gander invites viewers to reconsider the role of the artwork, the institution, and the spectator.

Alongside the booth presentation, we're happy to present a work by Meiro Koizumi in the Sculpture Park and a video by Marijke van Warmerdam in Projections.

Happy Lunar New Year; welcome to the Year of the Horse 🐎

In the Chinese zodiac, the Horse is associated with stamina, independence, and drive. It represents movement - physical, mental, and social - and the energy required to sustain it.

To mark the occasion, we’re sharing ‘Backward’ (1997) by Erik Wesselo. The short film shows a man riding his horse backwards through a forest. The action is physically demanding and deliberately purposeless - undertaken simply to overcome the difficulty itself.

In a year defined by motion, ‘Backward’ shifts the emphasis from speed to effort. Progress, here, is not about a clear linear direction but endurance.
