After years in prison in Belarus, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski was released in December 2025.

In this interview, recorded at the Nobel Peace Center, he speaks about that time and about holding on to his belief in human rights for all – even under pressure.
Bialiatski has spent his life working for democracy and human rights in Belarus, and is seen as a beacon of light across Eastern Europe.

Today, 21 May, we mark The Day of Dialogue, on the UN World Day for Cultural Diversity and Dialogue.

At a time of increasing polarisation, we need more moments defined by equality, openness and curiosity.

Here are five simple tips to bring into your Day of Dialogue:
• Everyone is equal
• Meet each other with respect and openness
• Listen with empathy and curiosity, without prejudice
• Ask questions to learn
• Share your story to be understood

Everyone has a story you need to hear, and a perspective you can learn from.

Every Friday in the summer season, a dove flies from the windows of the Nobel Peace Center with a message of hope.

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2023 was awarded to Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and for promoting human rights and freedom for all. She has been imprisoned for several periods since 2016 and has 18 years remaining on her current sentence.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has expressed deep alarm regarding her critical health condition. On Sunday, she was released on bail and sent to Tehran for medical treatment amid growing international pressure and concern.

Narges Mohammadi is imprisoned solely for her peaceful human rights work.

Today, the peace dove flew in the hope of her recovery and the immediate release of Narges Mohammadi.

Gen Z – A democratic life buoy? Join the final Nobel Peace Talk before the summer, 13 May, for an inspiring evening exploring the power of youth in shaping the future of democracy!

Before this event, we offer a guided tour in the Peace Prize Exhibition Democracy on the Brink, included in your ticket. The event is free, but requires registration.

Hear powerful testimonies and learn about protest movements through the voices of young people from different parts of the world. This event is created in partnership with United World College Red Cross Nordic, which has 200 students from over 80 countries.

For the first time, the peace dove carried a capsule with printed messages of peace. The same kind of capsule were once used to send messages during World War II. Today, on Liberation Day, it carries words of hope🕊️

The messages were written by 500 visitors at the museum KODE in Bergen as part of the art project Finding the Way Home, and are sent out into the world today. One dove from Oslo and simultaneously from Bergen.

Every Friday, from today until 9 October, a peace dove will be released from the windows of the Nobel Peace Center, carrying a message of hope. As the dove passes the square, the city hall bells play the John Lennon tune Give Peace a Chance.
