SABEL PRINTS by BenCab
at BenCab Museum's Sepia Gallery
18 April to 7 June 2026
(The prints are for exhibition only and are not for sale).

National Artist BenCab first encountered his iconic muse on the streets of Bambang. SABEL was a vagrant who fashioned garments from discarded plastic and cloth. Her improvised, flowing drapery offered a rich study in line, texture, and abstraction. She eventually became a defining figure in BenCab’s works.

Across decades, BenCab rendered Sabel not as a fixed likeness but as a shifting presence—both subject and symbol. Her obscured form resists traditional portraiture, with layered folds creating dynamic, almost sculptural compositions that bridge figuration and abstraction.

The Sabel series marks a pivotal moment in his practice, where social observation meets formal exploration, capturing tensions between visibility and anonymity, fragility and resilience.

MANGGAGAWA (Workers) by BenCab
Acrylic on canvas 2009

MANGGAGAWA is the Filipino term for "worker" or "laborer".
In the context of BenCab's art, it often refers to his painting series depicting Filipino laborers, which are iconic representations of the working class. These paintings are a tribute to the hardworking men and women who contribute to the nation's development.

WOMEN OF THE PAST Larawan Drawings by BenCab
at BenCab Museum's Gallery Indigo
18 April to 7 June 2026

BenCab began the Larawan series in the early 1970s while living in London, where he found 19th-century colonial photographs, prints, and postcards in antiquarian shops. These archival images became a vital source of inspiration, evoking a profound sense of nostalgia and displacement as the artist navigated life far from the Philippines.

In this series, WOMEN OF THE PAST foregrounds representations of the Filipina in the colonial era, depicted in moments of quiet routine and everyday tasks. Dressed in traditional garments such as the baro’t saya and the more formal traje de mestiza, they embody the grace and constraints of their historical milieu.

Through these images, BenCab articulates a deeply personal meditation on Philippine identity and history, in an interplay between memory and imagination. They reveal how visual culture - filtered through time and distance - can reconstruct and reanimate the past.
