The BOX Gallery

The BOX Gallery Non-profit, artist-run gallery exhibiting contemporary art in downtown Akron. It is a project of Artists of Rubber City, run by members and volunteers.

The Box Gallery is a contemporary art gallery that opened in 2009 on the 3rd floor of Summit Artspace in downtown Akron, Ohio. The gallery is open Friday, noon - 7, and Saturday, 11 - 5, during exhibitions. Members of Artists of Rubber City are eligible for month-long exhibitions in the (small) BOX Gallery.

"Castles and Cathedrals explores the differing time periods of construction, the utilitarian designs teamed with the defensive mindset needed to protect the inhabitants of the city, as well as the safekeeping of the royals. The cathedrals were diverse . . . some wore the expensive construction like a badge of honor while others were more humble and crude. While some of these places of worship were consecrated as holy ground, others gained their holiness by the mere primitive presence on the landscape, inspiring awe.
It is my hope that these images ignite a desire to see these places for yourself and marvel at the wonders of history."

"While touring the British Isles and anticipating the visit to admire all the old architecture of the castles and cathedrals, I noticed that not all of the buildings were old. I also noticed the ‘cringey’ juxtaposition of a structure from the 1500s next to one built in, say, the 1980s. As much as I enjoyed the lovely arches and statuary of the cathedrals, and the historical understanding of the many purposes contained in castle life, I found myself drawn to all the questionable modern architectural additions that graced the once ancient skyline.
Therefore, two bodies of work emerged. ‘Castles and Cathedrals’ and ‘These Don’t Go.’"

Summit Artspace renovations are beginning in early August, with completion anticipated by late November. Because the building will be closed to the public during this time, all summer exhibits are ending. Watch for the grand reopening later this year!
