Update: "60 Minutes" shakeup; Cecilia Vega out [What Paramount's Merger Plan Has to Do With You (Notices 5-27-26)]

Just as Seth Stern of the Freedom of the Press Foundation told us in yesterday 's post < https://tinyurl.com/mubfx9bw > that " “I’d say that what’s happening at CBS is a pretty good predictor of what is likely to happen at CNN," citing that as one reason for us to sign his letter opposing Paramount's merger plans, Benjamin Mullin of the New York Times today reports:

CBS News Names an Outsider, Nick Bilton, to Lead ‘60 Minutes’

Mr. Bilton, a tech journalist and filmmaker, said he would bring new voices to the show. The overhaul by Bari Weiss, CBS’s editor in chief, included the firing of the correspondent Cecilia Vega.

Bari Weiss, the editor in chief of CBS News, signaled a new direction for the nation’s top news program on Thursday, replacing the executive producer of “60 Minutes” with Nick Bilton, a longtime tech journalist and documentarian who has never worked in traditional broadcast news.

The appointment came as part of a significant shake-up at the venerable Sunday evening news program. Cecilia Vega [pictured], a correspondent, was fired on Thursday, as was the current executive producer, Tanya Simon, who had spent more than 30 years at the program.. . .

To mark World Freedom Day, May 3, two essays.

Alison Bethel of States News in the U.S., which has sunk to 64 on Reporters Without Borders' World Press Freedom Index of 180 countries, thanks to Donald Trump's anti-press policies.

Alison says: "Independent journalism does not, on its own, create peace. It doesn’t solve inequality. It doesn’t fix broken systems.

"What it does — at its best — is shine a light.

"And that matters more than we often acknowledge."
https://pro.stateaffairs.com/.../world-press-freedom-day...

Yaima Pardo, writing about Cuba, which ranks 160th and has no free press, says, "This May 3rd, Cuban journalists commemorate the date amidst a complex reality, where reporting remains, for many, a daily act of resistance and commitment to the truth."
