Harriet Quimby was a journalist, adventurer, and aviation pioneer who refused to let the expectations of her time keep her on the ground. In 1911, she became the first American woman to earn a pilot’s license, quickly gaining attention for both her flying skills and her signature purple satin flying suit.

Less than a year later, Quimby made history again when she became the first woman to fly solo across the English Channel on April 16, 1912. Her incredible accomplishment received less attention than expected because it occurred just one day after the sinking of the Titanic.

Although her aviation career was tragically short, Quimby challenged stereotypes and showed the world that women had a place in the skies. Her fearless spirit helped pave the way for the generations of women in aviation who followed.

in 1932, Amelia Earhart set the women’s record for the fastest non-stop transcontinental flight, completing a 2,477 mile journey in just 19 hours and 5 minutes. She proudly became the first woman to fly coast-to-coast, embarking from Los Angeles and landing in Newark. 150 well wishers greeted her in Newark to celebrate her new record.

She flew her "Little Red Bus," the same Lockheed Vega 5B that she flew over the Atlantic Ocean in May 1932. The Vega is on exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.
