In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova, made history as the first and youngest woman to journey into space. 🚀 Born in Maslennikova, Russia, in 1937, she discovered her passion for parachuting early in life. She was an ideal candidate for the Russian Vostok capsule which required cosmonauts to eject at about 20,000 feet during re-entry. Valentina volunteered and was selected as one of only 5 women to train in 1962.

At just 26 years old, on June 16 1963, Valentina launched into space with the call sign "Chaika" or seagull. She radioed," It is I, Seagull! Everything is fine. I see the horizon." She orbited Earth 48 times over 2 days, 22 hours, and 50 minutes.

Women In Aviation - Elinor Smith

Elinor Smith was one of aviation’s brightest young stars, earning her pilot’s license at just 16 years old and quickly becoming known as “The Flying Flapper of Freeport.” A fearless and talented aviator, Smith captured national attention in the late 1920s with daring flights and record-breaking achievements, including endurance and altitude records.

She became especially famous for flying under New York City’s East River bridges, a stunt that showcased both her confidence and skill. At a time when aviation was still new and opportunities for women were limited, Elinor Smith helped prove that women belonged in the cockpit and inspired future generations of female pilots.
