Big news! Two new Really Small Museums are launching at Austin Nature & Science Center 🌿✨

Fittingly, our first show is the perfect way to launch this project at Austin’s FREE Nature & Science Center… and to kick off summer break!☀️

Come join us at Zilker Nature Preserve this May 9th to celebrate Austin preserves and the newest installment of the ROAM Museum: artist Suzanne Wyss’ What You Are Made Of.

The event kicks off at 9:00 with a volunteer cleanup, wrapping up around 10:30. Afterwards, Suzanne will be on hand to discuss the piece and her creative process; feel free to stay after to explore the preserve!

About the piece:

Using mixed media and recycled materials, Suzanne’s piece takes the viewer underground, providing an imaginative glimpse into the literal foundations of the Austin landscape. Questioning material integrity through the lens of an underground world, Suzanne explores the surprising fluidity of the ground beneath our feet, and asks us to consider the ways in which humans and geology mutually reshape one another.

The ROAM Museum is a collaboration between APR and artist Juliet Whitsett, whose Really Small Museum has been bringing art to Austin parks since 2021. Suzanne Wyss | What Are You Made Of, 2026

This piece imagines what a tiny piece of our Austin landscape could look like underground. As a geologically rich place, two of our unique landscape typologies are the Edwards aquifer limestone, called Karst (aka holey rocks/lucky rocks/hag stones), and the Blackland Prairie, with its long magical fibrous roots underground. How do we humans also make an appearance underground? Questioning material integrity through the lens of an underground world, Suzanne explores limestone’s ability to be shaped by fluid, in return, the limestone cleans the water, sending it downstream refreshed. She explores prairie grass roots branching endlessly and fibrously, busy with microbes in the soil transforming atmospheric carbon into stable inorganic carbon, reaching deep below the surface to deliver nutrients and find water. Humans above ground send miniscule particles into the soils that will become their own geologic wonder one day, but what are we leaving behind in our wake?. What happens when these environments mingle? Each is a filter for something, a route to be traveled through, an interaction. What are you made of?

Ruben Esquivel’s ‘The Bluff Remembers’

This piece is a tribute to land, memory, and the quiet work of preservation. Inspired by Red Bluff Nature Preserve and the people who fought to protect it , the composition centers my three uncles standing on the bluff, looking out over the landscape and city they helped preserve for future generations. Their presence is both personal and symbolic, representing community members who understood that protecting land is an act of care, responsibility, and love. Layered imagery of native plants, trees, wildlife, and sky creates depth and invites viewers to move through time as well as space. The shadow-box format reflects this layered history, allowing past, present, and future to exist simultaneously. Positioned between the natural preserve and the city beyond, the figures embody the balance between growth and conservation. Ultimately, this work honors those who protect places quietly and reminds us that landscapes like Red Bluff endure because people chose to stand for them.

Did you know Austin’s nature preserve system began in 1935 with the creation of Zilker Nature Preserve?

Since then, the City of Austin has protected over 2,600 acres of nature preserve that safeguard unique natural features, water, and biodiversity, and serve as places for us to escape from urban life and re-connect with nature.

But here’s a question…
How many of Austin’s nature preserves have you ROAMED?

The Really Small Museum is thrilled to introduce The ROAM. In partnership with Austin Parks and Recreation Land Management, The ROAM is a traveling eco-art project that will literally roam to six preserves, featuring six artists or researchers and their installations over the next year.

Each ROAM will live in a preserve for about two months… then it moves on.

Time in nature changes us.

The had the joy of spending 18 full months creating and connecting in the heart of Austin with some of the most amazing community members — the ARTISTS who shared powerful environmental messages, the TRAILBLAZERS who brought curiosity and support, and the incredible teams at and who made it all possible. 🌿✨

What a gift. Thank you for supporting this really small but BIG project, and the meaningful art it brought to the Trail.

Over the last 18 months on the Trail, the engaged 198 artists (with some incredible group shows!), was featured on TV, written up in print, and even voted the 2nd best place to see art in Austin!

This has truly been a community project I’ll never forget.

Welcome Nan Blassingame’s Native American Notions, for the month of October!

Nan Blassingame—a fashion designer, member of the Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, Creative Director of the Native American Cultural Center, and Arena Coordinator of the Austin Powwow—presents a series of miniature Indigenous fashion dresses. Each piece reflects her lifelong dedication to Native design and culture. Blassingame has been sewing since age 14, and her creative practice bridges tradition with contemporary expression. Behind the dresses, a backdrop features a detail from an authentic jingle dress—a powerful symbol of healing, protection, and prayer.

Blassingame’s work is rooted in land-based tradition and guided by generations of Indigenous knowledge. Her designs celebrate cultural visibility, pride, and the strength of living traditions that continue to evolve.

Austin, Texas, was traditionally the home of several Indigenous tribes, including the Tonkawa, Apache, Comanche, Lipan Apache, and Coahuiltecan. These tribes have a long history in the region, dating back thousands of years. In a time of environmental change, cultural memory offers a vital path forward. Blassingame’s work reminds us that resilience grows through honoring ancestral stewardship—through ceremony, craft, and care.

The Really Small Museum is a (really small!) exhibition concept founded in 2021 to spark inspiration, conversation, and connection. Just as the Earth and its ecosystems thrive on diversity, this POINT B Museum embraces the idea that to move from Point A to Point B in climate resilience, we must elevate and listen to diverse voices.
From May–October 2025, this installation will showcase six artists/ groups whose work explores their relationship with our environment. Curated and coordinated by artist Juliet Whitsett, in partnership with The Trail Conservancy, the RSM: POINT B highlights a range of perspectives, inspiring dialogue and action for a more sustainable future.
