In a tiny brick house on Baltimore’s North Amity Street in 1833-1835 Edgar Allan Poe wrote some of the early stories that would make him the father of the modern short story, and create and define the modern genres of mystery, horror and science fiction. His spirit and legacy live throughout Baltimore City, inspiring authors, poets, playwrights, businesses – and even our sports teams. Poe Baltimore celebrates this legacy. Poe Baltimore was created to fund, maintain and interpret The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum, and to celebrate the legacy of one of Baltimore’s most famous residents. We are dedicated to maintaining the museum as a vibrant experience for the thousands of visitors who come from around the world each year, and as part of a broader mission of city-wide events and educational opportunities. Poe Baltimore is committed to enriching the experience of visitors to Baltimore, who come to witness the city that inspired Edgar Allan Poe and his intellectual and literary heirs. We are committed to protecting, preserving and celebrating the rich history of the city, the house, and the legacy of one of our most beloved denizens.

As many of you may know, Poe started his published writing career here in Baltimore📜✍️
Elizabeth Cairnes Poe (Poe's grandmother) rented the home on 203 North Amity Street and lived there with her daughter Maria and her grandchildren Henry and Virginia. Without Elizabeth and Maria, Edgar would likely not have been able to start his writing career. His cousin, and later wife Virginia may also take credit in her role supporting Edgar through his tumultuous early career.
🚂Through the rest of their lives, Edgar, Virginia and Maria traveled together as a close family and are today buried in the same plot.🪦

Have you ever left a penny at Edgar Allan Poe’s grave? 🪙🖤

In 1875, Miss Sara Sigourney Rice, a Baltimore school teacher launched the “Pennies for Poe” campaign to raise money for a monument honoring the beloved Baltimore author. Her students brought in their extra pennies and a committee raised the rest.

Today, visitors continue to leave pennies at Poe’s grave as a small tribute to his enduring legacy.

We are still taking it all in, and there is no way we could possibly tag and thank everyone who helped make this festival happen. There were simply too many people, organizations, artists, performers, volunteers, vendors, partners, sponsors, staff, and friends who put their time, talent, and energy into making Poe Fest what it was.

It truly takes many hands to bring Poe Fest to life, and we could not have done it without every single one of you. 🖤
