Artifact Friday: Discoidals

This week, we’re highlighting two discoidals from our collection!

Discoidals were carefully shaped using a hammerstone, then polished with sand to smooth the surface. Sized to fit comfortably in the palm of the hand, these stones were historically used in Chunkey, a highly competitive Indigenous game. Players rolled the discoidal across a playing field and attempted to strike the moving stone with a spear.

The discoidal on the right is made of quartz and was recovered in Blytheville, Arkansas. It is classified as an “apple discoidal,” a rare variant characterized by shallow indentations on both faces. Apple discoidals are regionally restricted to southern Missouri and northern Arkansas.

While the discoidal on the right is made of quartz, the one on the left is made of sandstone, showing the variety of materials used to create these objects.
