Every day, staff from Birmingham Park and Recreation and the nonprofit, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Garden, work in tandem to tackle the myriad needs of operating and maintaining a 67-acre garden.

Meet the Member Plant Gift grown right here at the Gardens!

Senior Horticulturist Julia Adams collected seeds from the Japanese irises (Iris ensata) in the Japanese Garden and nurtured them from seedling to maturity. The beautiful irises will be ready to bloom in the spring. Swipe to see the journey! 🌱

Mark the start of fall with the Friends’ annual Fall Plant Sale on Friday, Sept. 18 and Saturday, Sept. 19 at Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Hundreds of plants— many of which have been nurtured at the Gardens by the Friends’ dedicated volunteer growing groups—will be available for purchase. Proceeds from the sale will support the Friends’ mission: to protect, nurture, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Heads up! Sewer work will affect our parking lot Monday, August 3 —Tuesday, August 4. Access to the Library at the Gardens and the westernmost parking row will be affected by the repairs.

Want to make a wish? Bring your friends and family to the Japanese Garden to celebrate Tanabata, the Japanese “Star Festival.” Put on by the Japan-America Society of Alabama with the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, this festival marks the reunion of two star-crossed lovers according to legend and occurs on the 7th day of the 7th month. The event will include traditional performances and activities. We invite you to make a special wish on tanzaku (colorful paper strips) and hang it on our ceremonial bamboo.

The Friends is excited to welcome author and biologist David Haskell to the Gardens where he will talk about the creative powers of flowering plants in his latest book, "How Flowers Made our World," an exquisite exploration of some of the most consequential life forms ever to have evolved. People often view flowers as simply decorative, but their value extends far beyond being ornamental. Learn how flowering plants help our world thrive as Haskell discusses magnolias, orchids, roses, and lesser-known flowers such as seagrasses.
