Did you know that some trees can grow roots from their branches?

Many plants like fig trees, camellias, and Japanese maples have this ability, and it's a great way to multiply your plants! Want to learn more about how this technique works? Join senior horticulturist Julia Adams for a hands-on workshop to learn how to propagate plants via air layering. This method of propagation allows you to multiply difficult-to-root plants during the summer when plants are still in an active growing phase. In this session, you will learn about the science behind air layering and practice on plants throughout the Japanese Garden.

We are delighted to welcome three new interns for the summer: Destiny Buchanan, Emma Bueschel, and Caroline Houseman. Emma and Caroline will work as public gardens horticulture interns, and Destiny will serve as an informal education intern.

Each will perform various duties around the Gardens under the guidance of our horticulture and education teams while learning about public garden horticulture, conservation, and our native flora. They will develop valuable, hands-on experience toward their careers.

The Friends are grateful to have them. Please stay tuned for updates on their adventures and projects this summer!

Join environmental educator and habitat gardener Michelle Reynolds as she leads participants through Kaul Wildflower Garden, using her artist’s eye to help them imagine a plant palette that incorporates nature into urban landscapes.

This class will help native plant lovers practice using iNaturalist to identify plants on their own walkabouts. Garden paths are uneven, so remember to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.
