Here is a little sneak peek of our exhibit design at the St. Luke & Odd Fellows Hall. This board is a part of a section of the exhibit that will pay homage to the residents of New Town, starting with Gilbert Vaughn. Gilbert Vaughn was the first Black landowner post emancipation and this Juneteenth we are honoring his legacy. Vaughn's ownership was the beginning of the community that supported one another during the atrocities of Jim Crow. Here at BMCF, we are working to make sure that the community is aware of the effects of segregation in Blacksburg and that this history is not forgotten. We will be closed for Juneteenth tomorrow and today I again offer this from "Huckleberry Finn," Chapter 31 which contains perhaps the most perfect line in early American literature. The epitome of a morality tale, not to mention the blueprint for all buddy films and stories that followed. The best unrelenting, witty and biting satire of a hypocritical and cruel “civilization”. And it was written 142 years ago and 18 years AFTER slavery was abolished. Even and especially now, these are still powerful words spoken from a child narrator. Our Education Room was one of the first to be finished on the second floor at the Alexander Black House, but we consider this an ever evolving exhibit and welcome any donations that pertain to education in Blacksburg as well as Montgomery County.

Back in March we had the pleasure of providing our 16 Squares Walking Tour to Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Montgomery County Regional Tourism.

Along this tour we explore the original 16 blocks of town and learn how it was formed, grew, and continues to thrive today! Stops include some of the original log cabins that were built in the early 19th century and discussion about the families that occupied them.

When folks walk through the doors at the Alexander Black House they often ask, "Can we go upstairs?" and we're happy to exclaim, "YES! Please do!". A lot of changes have taken place upstairs over the past year and we proudly offer several history exhibits on the second floor, so whether you haven't visited BMCF before or if it's been a while since your last visit, please come take a look at what we have to offer!

Has anyone visited the Alexander Black House recently? You may have noticed our gift shop rebrand Vaughn & Black Co. Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to rebrand our gift shop to honor some key figures in Blacksburg's history, Gilbert Vaughn & Alexander Black. Gilbert Vaughn was the first Black landowner in a neighborhood known as New Town and Alexander Black was one of the founders of the National Bank of Blacksburg. These two figures were pillars of their communities and made Blacksburg what it is today.
