We had a very special guest today at the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum. Miss Laura stopped by to donate her original Karma Henry painting to the Cultural Center. Thank you Miss Laura, we will make sure this special piece is well taken care of for generations to come.

As part of the students vocational training in the 1920's and beyond the Stewart boys learned stone masonry and built campus buildings with locally quarried stones. This rock, with pocket knife for scale, is a piece of tufa. Tufa is a freshwater limestone. This particular piece represents a spring which was situated beneath Pleistocene (10,000-2.4million years ago) Lake Lahontan which filled many valley basins from the Black Rock Desert in the north to Walker Lake in the south. Modern tufa formations can be found around Pyramid Lake and Mono Lake. Many of the stones used in the construction of the Stewart campus tell interesting stories of the geological history of Nevada. Dr. Jon Price (emeritus State Geologist), Beth Price, and Dennis Bryan, wrote a Geological Scavenger Hunt of the Stewart rocks, published by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology.

Come check out the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum, Gift Shop, and Campus walking tour! There is no cost to visit. The Museum and Gift Shop are open 10am to 5pm Monday-Friday.
