Been photographing this house (near Kennedyville, MD) for decades, but had to stop again this morning because I loved the way the Autumn reds were framing the structure. If you enjoy taking photos of historic homes and barns, scenic Route 213 from Wye Mills to the PA line offers many photo opportunities. Does anyone know the story behind the house?

Millpond Bird: The Ruby Crowned Kinglet was another favorite bird regularly visiting the millpond sanctuary, which is the setting for my upcoming book, Millpond Moments. I would always patiently wait and watch in hopes to get a glimpse, or better yet, a photograph, of the kinglet when its ruby crown is in full alert mode - a sight to behold.

Fishing on the Millpond: One of the stories in my upcoming Millpond Moments book is about my dear friend Ed (1933-2023), the blue-eyed fisherman, who fished nearly every day. His prize was recording his catches in his fish journal. Although the pond was stocked with plentiful bass and many other fish, known to be delicious, Ed released all his trophies back to the clear waters of the Galestown Millpond.

In one year I counted nearly 200 species of birds living within proximity of the millpond. This yellow fellow, a Prothonotary Warbler, was often seen in the vegetation near the pond and close to its nesting area, a dead tree cavity. It had an interesting habit of exploring its surroundings and foraging for insects upside down. If I was very still, it would pause to study me.

Millpond Moments is a collection of stories and images presented for the reader's simple pleasure, as respite from a hurried and sometimes frightening 21st Century world. It is an escape from the news of the day deep into a sanctuary where life shifts down into slower gear and respectful silence is the only way to eavesdrop and fully experience nature's unfolding theater. This compilation presents stories by season in a year of life around a Maryland mill pond. It is the first collection with many more stories waiting in the wings.

Hi FB family:
As many of you know, I wrote a column titled "Ponderings" for the Dorchester Banner which I submitted for one year for (four complete seasons) within the 16 years my residence was on the banks of the Galestown Millpond in Galestown, MD.

The column was published under the editorship of Logan Anderson. He helped fuel my courage to write creative nonfiction. I had plenty of experience as a technical writer, but my heart had always been yearning to write creatively about both human and animal nature. The millpond gave me plenty of story ideas as I observed the daily antics of wildlife (including the human kind) around the pond, plus reflected upon the pond life experienced as a child growing up near the Wye Mills Mill Pond.

Over the years I tried to sum up the confidence to finalize the book, but life kept placing speed bumps in my path, including two strokes, a heart attack, the loss of my parents, plus the recent death of my best friend. I think these events were God’s way of reminding me of the gifts He bestows on each of us, despite our challenges. Perhaps I was taking these gifts for granted.

While convalescing over the summer from illness and often when my mood was at the lowest, a key phrase kept coming to mind. This phrase was often recited by one of my trusted mentors (Dee Lyon), while I worked at Bethany House years ago. She had a poster in her office saying “God don’t make no junk!” It is a simple phrase, but so very powerful. So with the help of God, my mentors, editor Logan, many friends, my parents ( before they passed) and my Facebook family, who read and commented on stories I occasionally posted, my book, titled “Millpond Moments” is about to be published cuz God don’t make no junk! This was also very evident to me during my millpond observations.

For this early phase of publishing, I need your trusted help choosing the best cover design prepared by Prestige Authors using my millpond photos. The final sunrise cover was one I created years ago, but i have no attachment to it. The covers are shown below. Just let me know which one resonates for you as your opinion is very important to me. Thank you for your wise insight and feel free to share.

I am so very grateful for the understanding and support of my customers as I navigated a super challenging prior year. I pray all these “speed bumps” are coming to a close. Friends have helped to cover my shop on most Saturdays. For the near future I hope to be open at least on Saturdays from 10-3, and then on other days if possible. Even if the shop is closed, customers are always welcome to call 410-758-7335 and request an appointment. Most days I am right upstairs and could come down to the shop to greet my beloved customers.
