A season of gathering, reflection, and shared experience at The 109 Gallery.

Kris Bespalec’s Sacred Bodies: Sanctuary continues to unfold, inviting us to slow down, enter, and experience art through presence, movement, and connection.

We have a beautiful calendar ahead, from quiet mornings of yoga and tea to an evening of black-and-white cinema, intimate sound and dance performances, and time in the gallery with Kris herself.

October 26 – November 3 | Mornings in Sanctuary, free yoga & tea

October 30 | A Black & White Halloween Evening, 5–11 PM

November 5 | Witness: Sound and Body, featuring Surreina Gallegos Gerbman of Sanctuary of Sound & Light and Sarah Yvonne of Ballet Esprit. Tickets $35, including refreshments.

November 20 | Meet the artist, Kris Bespalec, 12–4 PM

December 3 | Closing Reception, 6–8 PM

TONIGHT AT THE 109 | 6–8 PM

Join us this evening for the opening of Kris Bespalec: Sacred Bodies: Sanctuary, an immersive exhibition inviting reflection on the body, the sacred, and the spaces we create for care, connection, and belonging.

It's a beautiful evening to be in historic downtown Chickamauga! The Green Eyes Festival is also taking place, so our little town will be especially lively.

A little parking note: Parking is free throughout downtown. You'll find a public lot just before the railroad tracks as you enter town, along with street parking and additional parking on nearby side streets and at participating churches.

Come wander, experience the art, and enjoy an evening in our little corner of Appalachia. We look forward to welcoming you!

WEAD invites artists to submit work for Prototyping Futures of Making: Water, Data, and Living Systems, our 2027 international juried exhibition.

A little magic is happening inside The 109 Gallery. ✨

Install day with Kris Bespalec, as Sacred Bodies: Sanctuary begins to take form, salt, fibers, dye, illumination, and gesture slowly transforming the gallery into something altogether new.

A space to enter. To linger. To feel. To see and be seen.

A little behind the scenes as we prepare for our upcoming exhibition with Kris Bespalec.

Salt. Fibers. Dye. Illumination. Installation.

Sacred Bodies: Sanctuary is an evolving sculptural body of work exploring the intimacy of bearing witness, of seeing and being seen, of being present with another body and within our own. Through tactile materials and ritual gestures, Bespalec considers the body as a place of memory, tenderness, vulnerability, and sanctuary.

Enter, breathe, and soften.
In Sacred Bodies: Sanctuary, Chattanooga artist Kris Bespalec transforms The 109 Gallery through an immersive sculptural installation of salt, plant-based fibers, dye, and illumination.
An evolving body of work rooted in ritual, memory, and sacred place-making, Sacred Bodies considers what it means to bear witness, to see and be seen, and to become fully present. Within Sanctuary, suspended forms, light, material, and space invite visitors to move quietly through the installation, finding moments for rest, reflection, and encounter.
We are incredibly excited to welcome Kris and this expansive new iteration of Sacred Bodies to The 109.
