Please read carefully. As a downtown business we concur.

Coming back to work after a long Labor Day weekend has me in a reflective mood. This year has been hard. People are more cautious with their money (and rightfully so)--everything is more expensive, we are getting less for more, and each day seems to bring new economic, environmental, and social turmoil. We are constantly being fed AI propaganda, our consumer habits are being tracked, and we are bombarded with targeted ads and content. More and more billionaires are popping up. And while more and more working class people struggle, giant companies are making record profits. Profits should never be at the expense of people. And not only are these companies making money at the expense of people, they are spending those profits to lobby to protect themselves and their money and not the workers they exploit; They are investing more and more into AI for surveillance and to ultimately cut more jobs of working class people; They are investing money into foreign interests; They pay less (percentage wise) in taxes than any small business owner.

And I don't want to be a downer. And I know I sound like a broken record. But the Labor Movement came up to fight this kind of oppression. And as consumers we have all the power to enact change. Most small businesses do not exploit our labor. Our profit margins are smaller (most are just making ends meet, not making record profits). We are not spending our money to invest in AI to make working class folks’ jobs obsolete or ripping off artists' work. We are not surveilling your spending habits to target you with ads. We are paying (percentage wise) more in taxes than large corporations. And while under all that pressure, we show up day to day for our communities. We donate to local non-profits and organizations. We re-invest in our community. We treat our employees and customers like family.

But in order for small businesses like cottonparty to survive, we need sustainable foot traffic with folks regularly purchasing our goods. We can't survive if everyone buys online or from big box stores. As an individual, you hold more power than you think. It may take more effort to shop small and local, but it makes a BIG difference.

I love our downtown. I want to see it thrive. I don't want to give more money to billionaires who don't care about me and my community. So, if you have the means and want to enact change–consider shopping small and local, and support small businesses like ours before it is too late.

The downtown Chico businesses are struggling at this time of the year by no fault of our own and we need locals to come down and do some shopping for the Holiday season. To help, Park and Go is giving away the first two hours of free parking in the city-owned lots, July, August, and September (if all goes well they might extend it to the end of the year). This applies to the 10-hour parking lot surrounding Art Etc. Not only that but the meters in front of our building still have the coin operated meters that people have been missing as of late. Please come down and help out a business and enjoy the first 2 hours for free. Feel free to come in and ask us how to receive the 2 hours and we will gladly help you out. So come and park, visit us, and then walk around downtown and visit your other favorite businesses or eateries.

It is with sad hearts that we had to say goodbye this past weekend to a Chico legend David Simcox. He and Anna had owned Art Etc for 16 years prior to us taking over in 2018. They truly made the transition as seamless as possible and during that transition they quickly became my second family. Dave would come and visit me quite often and always amused the crap out of me and made me laugh even if I was having a rough day. His humor and wit was unparalleled and his talent for art was truly amazing. He would come in with some new art all the time and every time I was more impressed than the last. As I sob while writing this I think back to how many times someone would recall a memory about Dave, whether it was a story about his time being a professor at Chico State, or about a time witnessing him play the bass at a special event, or even just a time they sat and talked with him at Art Etc I realize how much impact he had on so many people. I could sit here all day and write beautiful things about Dave or I could tell Anna the same things she has already heard a million times in the past few days but I will stop now and let us all grieve in our own way. Thank you for making a lasting impression on my life David Simcox. You will truly be missed. RIP

I am looking for someone (or group) that is interested in free matboard scraps. All the scraps are in perfect condition and 100's of different colors but they are just a little too small for me to hang onto with the limited space I have here and too big to just throwing them in the trash. Sizes range from 5"x7" up to 16"x20". I have them stored in a box so picking them up would be a breeze. Please let me know if you, or someone you know, would be interested. DM me
