Henry James’s Washington Square (1880) is a quietly devastating portrait of love, money, and emotional cruelty in 19th-century New York. Through the shy and underestimated Catherine Sloper, James explores how social expectations and family power can shape — and harden — a life. The later adaptation The Heiress captures the same tension with unforgettable elegance and bitterness.

Charles Ives helped shape the sound of modern experimental music, influencing artists like the Grateful Dead and Frank Zappa with his fearless use of dissonance, improvisation, layered soundscapes, and musical freedom. Decades ahead of his time, Ives opened the door for generations of musicians to break the rules and redefine what music could be.

Charles Ives’ “Concord Sonata” (CONCORD, MASS., 1840–1860) is more than a piano work — it’s a musical portrait of transcendentalist America. Inspired by Emerson, Hawthorne, the Alcotts, and Thoreau, Ives captured the spirit of Concord through bold experimentation, flowing prose-like structure, hymn tunes, and echoes of Beethoven’s Fifth. A landmark of American modernism, the sonata remains one of the most influential works ever written by an American composer. Performed by pianist Tim Everitt. Sponsored by Hilton Piano Center.
