The Montgomery County Historical Society maintains, preserves, and makes historic Lane Place and the Speed Cabin available to the public. Lane Place was the former home of Henry and Joanna Lane. Henry purchased Lane Place in 1844and they lived on the property from 1845 to 1914. Their niece Helen Elston Smith inherited the home and continued to occupy the home until her death in 1939. She turned th

e house over to the Montgomery County Historical Society in 1931 and it has been a museum since that time. The ground of the home also contains the Speed Cabin, the former residence of John Allen Speed the Mayor of Crawfordsville from 1860 to 1861, whose home was a stop on the Underground Railroad. The Historical Society also conducts oral history projects, co-sponsors activities and events with other historical and cultural organizations, an plans and implements educational programming.

See here a pictorial representation of the 13th amendment signees - Lane is two up and two over from President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was able to see the amendment signed on January 31st, but would not live to see it ratified.
