On Memorial Day we remember service men and women who fell in the line of duty. George Richard Ensley of Dillsboro was killed on March 8, 1945 in Germany. His unit, the 60th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division had just crossed the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen on the Rhine River. Ensley had enlisted before the war in February 1941 and served in the regiment’s Medical Detachment for four years. Prior to the war, he was part of the CCC and worked in Camp ​F23 at Otto, NC. He’s buried at Franklin Cemetery in Dillsboro.
