This Indigenous People’s day, AANM honors the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) National Museum of the American Indian , and its exhibition Stretching the Canvas: Ten Decades of Native Painting, on view in Washington, DC through May 1, 2027.

NMAI’s vision is equity and social justice for the Native peoples of the Western Hemisphere through education, inspiration, and empowerment. Stretching the Canvas reflects that purpose by exploring how Native painters challenged assumptions about what Native art should look like.

As a Smithsonian Affiliate, AANM is proud to be in community with NMAI, honoring and uplifting its impact.

“I don’t want to die at 94 still waiting for peace.” — Rajie Cook

Internationally recognized Palestinian American designer, photographer, and artist Rajie Cook, best known for designing the Symbol Signs system that became a standard in public spaces across the U.S, later devoted his practice to exploring Palestinian heritage, human rights, and the hope for peace.

Waiting for Peace exhibit featured works from the final decades of Cook’s life, highlighting the sculptural assemblages through which he expressed his connection to Palestine and his vision for a more just future.
