DCHA Plans Lackawanna Coal Mine and Electric Trolley Museum Trip
Thursday September 24, 2026

Join the Delaware County Historical Association for a day trip to the historic Lackawanna Coal Mine and Electric City Trolley Museum in Scranton, PA. Enjoy a guided underground tour of the mine and then continue with a visit to the trolley museum and an antique trolley ride
Come with us on Thursday September 24, 2026, as we travel on a motor coach to these wonderful historic locations.
The Lackawanna Coal Mine is located in McDade Park near downtown Scranton. Snap on your hardhat and board the mine car to descend 300 feet into restored “Old Slope # 190.” Accompany a miner in the winding underground gangways and rock tunnel past three different veins of hard anthracite coal, past the mule boy and the nipper, past the monkey vein and the dead chute. Listen as he explains the fascinating methods used, and the heroic efforts involved, in deep mining’s history.
After the mine tour we will make the short trip across Scranton to the Electric City Trolley Museum where you can enjoy a lunch on your own (bring a bag lunch or snack) in a restored late-19th century mill building. We will have time to explore the museum before boarding an authentic antique trolley for a 5 ½ mile trip over Roaring Brook & through a mile-long tunnel. The day will end with dinner at Bingham’s Restaurant in Lenox, PA.
The cost of this day trip is only $130 for DCHA members and $150 for non-members, a portion of which is used to raise funds for our county’s museum. Price includes all admissions, trolley ride, transportation and dinner at Bingham’s Restaurant.
Passengers may board the motor coach in Oneonta and depart at 7:00 am and in Delhi at 7:30 am. We estimate our return time to be approximately 8:00 pm in Delhi and 8:30 pm in Oneonta.
For further information or reservations please call: (607) 746-3849, or email: [email protected]
Reservations required by September 10, 2026.

Book Signing & Presentation – Escape From the Sugar House: Levi Hanford and the American Revolution

Join us as DCHA’s Director, Tim Duerden gives a presentation based on his new book just published by Purple Mountain Press. The book is titled Escape From the Sugar House: Levi Hanford and the American Revolution and it tells the tale of a teenaged Levi and his incarceration by the British as a POW during the American Revolution. Although the book is mostly fiction, the narrative is based on true events and relates some of the actual episodes of young Levi’s wartime experiences.
At 212 pages, the book is beautifully illustrated with drawings, and it will be available for purchase at this event. Genres: Historical Fiction & Young Adult (enjoyable for adults too!).
Admission to the presentation is free and open to the public. Refreshments served. Tim will also be available to sign purchased copies of his book. Cost of book is only $25.00.
