To all those who have joined our event group and reenact Germans, the group is open for everyone to view event details and see what the hype is about. HOWEVER, we would like to make it explicitly known that this event is invite-only by unit. Certain units have been pre-approved for attendance. We will be releasing directions on how to apply to request for your unit to be invited. As usual, stay tuned for further information posts!

On January 23, 1927, the Soviet Union founded OSOAVIAKhIM (EN: The Society for the Promotion of Defense, Aviation, and Chemical Construction / RU: Общество содействия обороне, авиационному и химическому строительству), an organization that would become one of the most influential mass mobilization and training institutions of the interwar period. Today, January 23, marks the 99th anniversary of its establishment.

Between 1927 and its reorganization into DOSAAF in 1948, OSOAVIAKhIM played a critical role in bridging civilian society and military preparedness. It functioned as a nationwide system of pre-military education, providing millions of citizens with foundational skills in marksmanship, aviation, radio operation, engineering, chemical defense, first aid, and physical conditioning. These programs were not peripheral; they were integral to Soviet defense planning and reflected the belief that modern war required technically trained, disciplined citizens long before formal conscription.

The organization’s influence is evident in its members' achievements. Numerous decorated pilots, snipers, tank crewmen, radio operators, sailors, and engineers who distinguished themselves during the Great Patriotic War received their first instruction through OSOAVIAKhIM clubs. Early aviation heroes and test pilots emerged from its flying schools, while future commanders and specialists benefited from its emphasis on technical literacy and applied science. Even beyond combat roles, OSOAVIAKhIM cultivated expertise in civil defense, firefighting, and emergency response, reinforcing its dual civil-military character.

Perhaps most importantly, OSOAVIAKhIM instructors formed the backbone of Soviet wartime training capacity during World War II. When the invasion of 1941 forced rapid mobilization, the USSR already possessed a vast cadre of experienced trainers capable of turning civilians into competent soldiers under extreme pressure. Their prewar work dramatically shortened training timelines and contributed directly to the Red Army’s ability to replace losses, operate complex equipment, and sustain prolonged combat operations.

OSOAVIAKhIM stands as a powerful example of how mass education, technical training, and civic participation were harnessed in the service of national defense. As we approach the 99th anniversary of its founding, its legacy remains central to understanding how the Soviet Union prepared for — and ultimately endured — the most destructive conflict in its history. The OSOAVIAKhIM Foundation is proud to preserve its legacy through public education, historical and cultural preservation, and the encouragement of unity within the Soviet reenactment community.

We thank our partner Voin for reproducing instructor uniforms and insignia for their faithful adherence to detail.

Happy OSOAVIAKhIM Day!
