For more than ninety years the Evanston Art Center has been a major force in bringing together people, art and ideas. One of the oldest and largest visual art centers in Illinois, the Evanston Art Center's mission is to make the visual arts an integral and accessible part of the lives of the diverse audiences in the surrounding communities. The Art Center fulfills this mission through an extensive

offering of visual arts classes, public lectures, changing exhibitions, youth outreach activities, and publications, all of which are designed to engage and enrich the individual and the community. The Art Center was established in 1929 by a group of civic and cultural leaders from the Evanston community. Under her guidance, the Art Center was established and it thrived. Riley felt the true worth of a community could not be measured by economic success alone, but also had to take into consideration a rich cultural life.

Moritz Kellerman was born in Nicaragua and received a Bachelor's degree in Art History from the University of Washington in 1981. He continued his education in painting and drawing at Corpus Christi State University and later went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1988. As a graduate student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Kellerman was inspired by the work of the 20th-century artists Willem de Kooning and Richard Diebenkorn. That influence can be seen in his earlier works. Kellerman is also inspired by the work of the Old Renaissance Masters, and that influence is a big part of his painting process today.

Presence and Absence: The Space Between explores the dual reality of death—the physical disappearance of those we love and the enduring emotional, spiritual, and cultural traces they leave behind. Through sculpture, painting, performance, and participatory installations, the exhibition brings together fragile and enduring materials to reflect on memory, loss, and the tension between impermanence and our human desire to hold on.
