“The Price of the Ticket” closes April 25th at the

“I began these works a couple years ago after what I perceived as an erasure of Black Culture. That includes Literature, History, and the Arts. I called them “Boxing Portraits” because of their fight for respect and remembrance in their own times and ours. I started them as regular portraits with added evidence of physical abuse to represent the professional and systemic abuse they dealt with. In some cases there were source images where they were really beaten up—Miles Davis, Ralph Ellison (from a mugshot), and Amiri Baraka. Some were actually boxers like Jersey Joe Walcott. “
